BARONY OF STAPLETON (II) 1314
NICHOLAS (DE STAPLETON), LORD STAPLETON, son and heir, by 1st wife, wasborn about 1288-90. On 27 December 1310 he had proved his age and donehomage. On 15 March 1314/5 he had letters of credence concerning thedefence of the Scottish marches. From 12 February 1315/6 onwards he wasfrequently summoned to serve against the Scots; and was in commissions.On 16-17 March 1321/2 as Sire Nicholas de Stapleton, Bachelor, he wastaken prisoner in arms against the King at the battle of Boroughbridge;and he was fined 2,000 marks and 2 tuns of wine yearly for ever foradhering to the Earl of Lancaster. He was summoned by writ dated 30 May1324 to attend a great Council at Westminster as a knight returned by theCounty of York, and he was again summoned by writ dated 25 February1341/2 to attend a Council; but he was never summoned to Parliament. In1327 his manors of Haddlesey and Carlton, which had been held on behalfof the King because he was a member of the Earl of Lancaster's household,were ordered to be restored to him. On 1 October 1335 he obtained a grantof free warren in Walkingham and Melsonby.
He married, before Hilary Term 1300/1, Isabel, daughter of John DERICHMOND of Constable Burton (d). He died before 10 June 1343. Isabelsurvived him. [Complete Peerage XII/1:263-4, (transcribed by DaveUtzinger)]
(d) Baildon [one of CP's sources] citing a settlement made upon him byhis father. Baildon disposes of the suggestion that his wife wasdaughter of John (de Bretagne), Duke of Brittany and Earl of Richmond,who d.s.p. legit. Isabel's parentage is perhaps not fully proved.
