BARONY OF STAPLETON (1313)
MILES DE STAPLETON, son and heir, on 17 June 1291 was staying in Scotlandwith Roger de Mowbray on the King's service. In 1293 he established hisright to free warren in Stapleton and elsewhere. On 20 August 1295 he wasgoing to Gascony. On 9 October 1300 he was going to the Court of Romewith Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln. In 1302 he was Constable ofKnaresborough Castle. On 5 March 1304/5, he is described as a knight. InOctober 1307 and in 1308 he was bailiff of Holderness, and was later incommissions. On 2 January 1307/8, as Steward of the King's Household, hewas going beyond seas with the King. In 1311 and 1312 he was summoned toperform military service against the Scots. He was summoned to Parliamentfrom 8 January 1312/3 to 26 July 1313, by writs directed Miloni deStapleton, whereby he is held to have become LORD STAPLETON. On 16October 1313 he, with his son Nicholas, was pardoned, as an adherent ofThomas, Earl of Lancaster, for participation in the death of Piers deGavaston.
He married, 1stly, Isabel or Sibyl, daughter of John DE BELEWE, byLaderance [to whom she was coheir], sister and coheir of Sir Piers DEBRUS III of Skelton and Danby in Cleveland and 4th daughter of Sir PiersDE BRUS II, of the same; and, 2ndly, Joan.
