SIR THOMAS HOO, of Luton-Hoo, Beds, Wartling, Sussex, Ockley, Surrey,Mulbarton, Norfolk, &c., son and heir of Sir Thomas Hoo, of the same, byhis 1st wife, Eleanor, widow of Sir Robert D'UFFORD, of Wrentham,Suffolk, and younger daughter and coheir of Sir Thomas DE FELTON, K.G.,of Litcham, Norf-olk, was Esquire of the Chamber to Thomas (Beaufort),Duke of Exeter, whose will (1426) he witnessed. He was Sheriff of Bedsand Bucks 10 February 1429/30, and on 18 June 1434 was in France. He tookpart in the operations in the Pays de Caux in 1436, returning apparentlyto England the same year, when, 19 May, he had a safe conduct, being inthe retinue of the Earl of Suffolk. In 1437 he was Bailiff of Mantes. Hehad lctters of attornoy on setting out for France, was Captain ofVerneuil in 1441. and apparently still Bailiff of Mantes. On 29 June1442, for his services in the wars in France, he was granted £40 a yearout of the issues of Norfolk, and on 9 September 1442 was nominated oneof the commissioners to treat of peace with France. He had letters ofattorney, 24 March 1443/4, on going abroad on an embassy, being one ofthe commissioners who negotiated a truce, 27 June 1444, and on 12 Augustfollowing was sent with Sir Robert de Roos and Garter by the King to theQueen in France. He appears as Chancellor in France and Normandy 18 March1444/5, and in July 1445 he and Sir Robert de Roos met the ambassadors ofFrance and Spain at Rochester. He was nominated K.G. 11 July, andinstalled 16 August 1445. On 19 July 1445 he had a grant to him, hisheirs and assigns of the Castle, Lordship, Barony and Honour of Hastings.He appears again as Chancellor of Normandy in 1446, and as Chancellor ofFrance and Captain of Mantes in 1447, and in 1448 as Chancellor ofFrance. On 2 June 1448, for his good service in England, France andNormandy, he was created, the grant being to him and his heirs male, LORDHOO of Hoo in the county of Bedford and of Hastings in the county ofSussex. He was summoned to Parliament 2 January 1448/9, 5 September 1450,and 20 January 1452/3, by writs directed Thome Hoo Chivaler. In 1449, asChancellor of France, he was sent with the Abbot of Gloucester by theDuke of Somerset, Lieutenant of France and Normandy, to inform the Kingand Parliament of the state of affairs in France, being also one of thecommissioners appointed to deal with the French commanders touching thesurrender of Rouen, Caudebec, Harfleur, &c. In 1450 he appears to havereturned to England, sharing the unpopularity of the Duke of Somerset. In1453 he was on a commission to treat in Surrey and Sussex for a loan torelieve the Earl of Shrewsbury's army in the Duchy of Aquitaine and cityof Bordeaux.
He married, 1stly, Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas WYCHINGHAM, ofWychingham, Norfolk. He married, 2ndly, Eleanor, daughter and heir ofLionel (WELLES), LORD WELLES. He died s.p.m., 13 February 1454/5, whenthe Barony became extinct. His widow married, 2ndly, James LAWRENCE, and,3rdly, as is stated, Hugh, HASTINGS.
His immediate heir male was his brother of the half blood, Thomas Hoo,who died s.p. or s.p.m., 8 October 1486. His daughters and coheirs were,by the said Elizabeth [Wychingham], Anne, aged 30 and more at herfather's death; and by the said Eleanor [Welles], Anne, aged 8, Eleanor,aged 6, and Elizabeth, aged 4 and more. (1) Anne married, before herfather's death, Geoffrey Boleyn, citizen and alderman of London,afterwards knighted, being Lord Mayor of London. She wasgreat-grandmother of Anne Boleyn, 2nd Queen Consort of Henry VIII. (2)Anne married Sir Roger Copley, of Roughey, by whom she had issue RogerCopley. (3) Eleanor is said to have married 1stly, Thomas Echingham, whodied s.p.. She married [2ndly], in or before 1468, James Carew, by whomshe was mother of Sir Richard Carew and grandmother of Sir NicholasCarew. (4) Elizabeth married, 1stly, Thomas Massingberd, by whom she hada daughter and heir Anne Massingberd, and, 2ndly, Sir John Devenish, bywhom she had issue Richard Devenish.
