George Washington Thomas enlisted at Relfs Bluff, Arkansas June 18, 1861. He went to Pine Bluff, Ark., then to Memphis, Tenn. He entered real warfare at the Battle of Corinth, Missississippi.
*** He joined as a private in Captain Isom's Company (Cut-off Guards), Arkansas Infantry, which subsequently became Company F, 9th Regiment Arkansas Infantry, Confederate States Army. ** #The 9th Regiment was known as the "Parson's Regiment" because it contained forty-two ministers.# ***
He was seriously wounded at Corinth, Miss. He was carried by wagon to Canton, Miss. He was admitted to 1st Mississippi Confederate States Army Hospital, Jackson, Mississippi, July 13, 1863, and sent to General Hospital, July 14, 1863. He was hopitalized for 6 months. After leaving the hospital next service was as a wagoner to Baton Rouuge, La.
The company muster roll for July 1 to September 1, 1864, last on record file, shows him "On extra duty as waggoner."
Next engagement was at Bakers Creek when Vicksburg, Miss. was surrounded. Union prisoner of war records show that he was captured near Nashville, Tennessee, December 15, 1864, imprisoned at Military Prison, Louisville, Kentuckey, and Camp Douglas, Illionis, where he was released June 20, 1865, on taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
{Camp Douglas was located in Chicago, Ill. near Lake Michigan. It was known as the northern prison camp with the highest mortality rate of all Union Civil War prisons. The first prisoners arrived in Feb. 1862.}
His service was in Capt. Ison's company F, 9th Regiment. (this regiment was commanded by Colonel Bradley and later by Col. Rogers of Monticello, Ark.).

The largest battles were at Franklin and Nashville, Tenn. He was taken prisoner Dec. 15, 1864, at this battle. He was first sent to a Union military prison at Louisville, Ky. He arrived Dec. 21, 1864. Then sent to Camp Douglas, Ill., arriving Dec. 22, 1864. Where he stayed till of the war. He was discharged from the prison June 1865. He was discharged from service in Arkansas the middle of June 1865, and returned to his farm.

Some of the information comes from the United Stated 'War Department', office of The Adjutant General, Major General E.S. Adams. This was in responce to a request for information made by Mairee Ross Staggs, grand-daughter of G.W. Thomas, in 1939-40.

George Washington Thomasmid 1800's
George Washington Thomas was born in Barbour County Alabama. He was the seventh child of Joel Thomas and Foeba Hagler Thomas. He was born Feb 26, 1840. The family moved to Mississippi then to Arkansas where the family homesteaded land in Drew County, now Lincoln County.
On July 25, 1825 he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Pine Bluff, Ark. He was assigned to Co B, 9th Reg't of the Arkansas Inantry, then transfered to Co F on Apr 7, 1862. He was wounded in action at Corinth, Mississippi, Oct 3, 1862 and furloughed. He was carried by wagon to Canton, Miss. where he was hospitalized for 6 mos. Though crippled he returned to duty as a wagoner June 30, 1863; captured near Nashville, Tenn., Dec 15, 1864: sent to Camp Douglas, Ill.; released on oath of allegiance, June 20, 1865 and discharged He served the Confederacy in Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee. He returned to Lincoln County to farm.
