Van Nikkelen Kuyper, François Pieter Jacob (*Middelharnis, Neth., 19.1.1833 - Pretoria, 17.9.1911), teacher and civil servant of the Transvaal Republic, was the son of the Dutch Receiver of Revenue Gerard Jean Eduard van Nikkelen Kuyper and his wife, J. Sabe. After training as a teacher Van N. occupied a post as school principal at Buiksloot, near Amsterdam, for thirteen years.
On the recommendation of President T. F. Burgers* who visited the Netherlands in 1875, he decided to emigrate to the Transvaal Republic and on 1.5.1876 succeeded C. W. E. J. Eekhout as district teacher in Pretoria. After the annexation of the Transvaal in 1877, during British rule, he continued his activities under protest. In addition to being made magistrate's clerk and public prosecutor of Rustenburg (12.8.1879), he became storekeeper and justice of the peace in November. Then followed his appointment as clerk (1.8.1881) and later (7.9.1882) as secretary to the Orphan Master of the T.R., J. S. Joubert.
In 1882 he was also entrusted with the administration of the Pension Fund, established that year from moneys collected in various countries during and shortly after the First Anglo-Boer War (1880-81), for destitute Transvaalers. He succeeded Joubert as Orphan Master on 23.2.1887 and simultaneously until 1900 held the office of Master of the Pretoria Supreme Court. In 1896 he served on the advisory committee nominated in Pretoria under the super-vision of the Dutch Consul-General in the T.R., F. J. Domela Nieuwenhuis, to promote Dutch immigration to the Transvaal.
With the dissolution (1910) of the Nederlandsch Bijstandsfonds voor Zuid-Afrika, which had been established in 1901 for Boers left destitute by the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), Van N. distributed outstanding moneys to various South African charities.
He married Petronella Margretha Holtermann and had four sons and four daughters. His daughter Johanna Elizabeth Cornelia married C. F. Delfos,* one of the founders of the South African Iron and Steel Corporation (Iscor).
