There is no direct proof of the identity of Margaret, wife of Alisdair MacDonald; the following explains her identification:
Hamish Maclaren, World Connect db=maclaren, rootsweb.com, has a source (which I have not read, but accept on faith), that states that Alisdair's wife was the daughter of the Earl of Lennox, whom I named "Miss Lennox". Hamish has done extensive research, especially on people of Scotland, but he had her father as Malcolm, the 5th Earl of Lennox, who I thought to have lived too early to be Miss Lennox's father. I found information on Margaret Lennox in the Complete Peerage, which would fits the timeline requirements for Hamish Maclaren's Miss Lennox to a tee. In fact, given that Alisdair married a daughter of the Earl of Lennox, I believe that Margaret is the only viable candidate available. I give below the entry from the Complete Peerage for Margaret, as well as my post-em/e-mail communication with Hamish Maclaren.
Note that there is a consanguinity problem in the next generation, as they are 1st cousins, but that type of problem would be caused by any daughter of the Earl of Lennox, and not because she is identified as Margaret.

Margaret m. before 25 July 1392, Robert Menteith of Rusky (dead 1411), and was living 18 May 1451, but probably dead in 1453. She had issue by Robert, Sir Murdoch Menteith, who d. before 1456. Sir Murdoch has a son Patrick, who d. young and unmarried, and two daughters: Agnes, who m. about 1460 Sir John Haldane of Gleneagles, and Elizabeth, who m. John Napier, son and heir apparent of Sir Alexander Napier of Merchiston, Knight. [Complete Peerage VII:593-4]

Below are my post-em and response from Hamish Maclaren:
Hello
Sorry for the delay in replying to you, I am afraid that towards the end of November my computer died (with a loud crack and smoke) and even the hard drive was not recoverable. I then left town for a month over the holidays, but I am now back and last week got a new computer. So I can finally start reply too the 40 or more family tree e mails I have received and will be correcting and adding to the family tree file. I should have a new/improved version on the web in a week or two.
I have looked at what you suggest and at page 593 under "Lennox" in The Complete Peerage, by G E Cokayne and I think you have a good point so I will change her father as you suggested.
Thanks for the help
Hamish Maclaren

Even though you have sources, for the parents of "Miss" Lennox, by my reckoning she was born too late to be daughter of Malcolm, the 5th Earl (d. 19 Jul 1333). I estimate her birth year to be 1370-90.
My current favorite, as a candidate is Margaret Lennox, 2nd daughter of Duncan, the 8th Earl. According to CP VII:593, she m. bef. 25 July 1392 Robert Menteith of Rusky, who was dead in 1411. CP doesn't mention any subsequent husband, but she died "bef 1453", which leaves a lot of room for a 2nd marriage. My estimated date of Alisdair's daughter who m. James Stewart is 1411-15, which would fit nicely with Menteith's death as 1st husband in 1411.
Do you have any thoughts or further sources on this matter?
