EARLDOM OF ESSEX

VI. 5. WILLIAM (DE MANDEVILLE), EARL OF ESSEX, next brother and heir, of the whole blood, On 4 November 1213 he had livery of the lands in Essex formerly held by Robert fitz Erneis, which the King granted him to hold as Geoffrey, his father, had held them.  Next day the King took his homage, and he had livery of his father's manor of Wellsworth, Hants.  For some contumacy he was excommunicated and imprisoned: he was absolved, and, 10 February 1214/5, ordered to be released.  Having joined the Barons In arms against the King, his lands were taken into the King's hand occasione gwerre, and those in Devon, and his manor of Gussage, Dorset, were granted away, 14 May 1215.  His lands of Aylesbury and Berkhampstead were restored to him, 25 June 1215.  Having again joined the Barons his lands were granted away to various persons, and he was excommunicated at the same time as his brother, Geoffrey, 16 December 1215. Hc was one of the barons who did hornage to I.ouls of France, at Rochester, about 31 May 1216. At the relief of Lincoln Castle, 20 May 1217, he saved himself by flight. Having returned to his allegiance, on 4 October 1217 he had livery of all the lands which his brother Geoffirey had held on the day that he receded from his fealty to King John, and which had been granted away.  The estates were, however, encumbered with the whole of the fine of 20,000 marks which Earl Geoffrey had incurred by his marriage to the Countess of Gloucester.  In June 1218 Maud de Say sued him for a moiety of her father's lands.  In July 1223 he was in Wales with the Earl of Salisbury and the Earl Marshal in their campaign against Llewelyn. ; In May 1,225 he was appointed a plenipotentiary to treat concerning peace with the King of France.

He married before 18 November 1220, Christine, sister of his elder brother's 1st wife, and 2nd daughter of Robert FITZ WAUTER, of Woodham Walter, by his 1st wife, Gunnor DE VALOINES.  He died s.p., 8 January 1226/7, and was buried in Shouldham Priory, his heart being buried in Walden Abbey.  His widow's dower was ordered to be assigned, 19 January 1226/7, and on 25 January following she had livery of the lands in cos. Norfolk and Cambridge which belonged to her by hereditary right, and had been taken into the King's hand on the Earl's death.  She married, before 15 May 1227, Raymond DE BURGH, of Dartford, Kent.  He accompanied the King on the expedition to Brittany in April 1230, and died on or just before 1 July 1230, being drowned in the Loire at Nantes: he was buried in the Hospital of St. Mary (Maison Dieu) at Dover.  She, who was eventually sole heir to her mother, died s.p., shortly before 17 June 1232, and was buried, with her 1st husband, in Shouldham Priory, her heart being buried (it would seem) in Binham Priory.  Her three cohirs had livery of her lands, 25 May 1233.

----------------------

William de Mandeville, Earl of Essex, like his deceased kinsman, espoused the cause of the barons and stoutly maintained it, even after the decease of King John, being one of those who then assisted Lewis of France in the siege of Berkhamstead Castle, occupied by the king's forced.  A sally having been made, however, from the garrison, much of the baggage of the besiegers was captured and, amongst other things, the banner of the Earl William.  His lordship seems to have made his peace soon after, for we find him engaged in the Welsh wars.  He d. in the flower of his age, 25 December, 1227, and, as he left no issue, the Earldom of Essex devolved upon his sister, Mary, Countess of Hereford, while the lands which he inherited passed to his half-brother, John FitzPiers.
