Arrived in America on August 14, 1902 (entering at Philadelphia) to find work and bring the remainder of his family to America to avoid unsettled political climate caused by conflicts between Austria and Poland. Settled initially in Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh to work in coal mines; later moved to Amsterdam NY to work in carpet factories. Date of entry and marriage date found on Mary Bubniak's Declaration of Intention to become a citizen of the US dated July 10, 1941 (cert no. 2-818563) and recorded at the Montgomery County offices in Fonda, NY. Brought wife and five Polish born children to America in 1913. Had two known brothers; Albert, who also immigrated to Amsterdam and another, Anton, who immigrated to South America. Anton also married the sister of Joseph's wife, Mary.
Obituaries say that he lived in West Newton for 10 years before coming to Amsterdam. West Newton, PA is about 20 miles south-southeast of Pittsburgh.
