I remember Grandma Smith as being very bossy. My dresses were always to short , I shouldn't wear anklets etc. But she mellowed with the years. As she grew older she was a sweet old lady , sat in her rocking chair and didn't say much . Marie Alice Joseph - White Grandma was going blank in telling everyone who and why they were to do things the way she wanted them done. I remember her setting and rocking the day of my wedding . My Aunts were swapping stories of how hard things were when they first married . She looked straight ahead , twiddled her thumbs as was her habit and told me " Don't ever pay attention to them, they would do the same thing if they had to do it all over again." Grandma Smith seemed to be a bitter woman . Her husband was an alcoholic . One time Grandma got so angry she charged out to the barn and dug around in the horse manger to find whiskey bottles. She proceeded to break each of them on the manger crying all the time. My Grandparents separated and lived with the kids they never spoke kindly of each other . The story was told of how she had an old mean mother cat that would take any dog around . The dog was crawling around through a hole in the fence when the cat dropped down from above. The blood and hair went flying for awhile as the dog couldn't back out of the hole to get away from the cat.
