Nimrod Moore was a "riverboat gambler" who moved to Hamilton Co. with his wife and 12 children in 1835, then continued his wanderings. Two of his sons were elders in the Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Some in the family farmed in Brainerd, and the road nearby became known as Moore Road.
Nimrod Moore was born in Virginia in 1794 and he married Sarah Jones, who was born there in 1795. Her father was Frederick Jones, a Revolutionary War veteran. Her brother, Jeremiah H. Jones, was nother Hamilton Co. pioneer.
Nimrod Moore was "a lineal descendant of John Moore of Ireland." Nimrod was apparently a free spirited man who was a saddler and who speculated in land over a wide area. He took his family to Bledsoe Co., then to McMinnville before pushing on prior to the Indian removal to the vicinity of White Oak Mountain.
By the time of the 1840 census, Sarah Moore was listed as the head of the household. She handled several land purchases in 1842, buying 40 acres from Daniel Temple for @33.12 ¬Î© and 40 acres from Leroy Standifer for $100. She paid William Towry #120 for 80 acres.
She was "an industrious woman, full of energy and practical sense and endowed with the wisdom of economy. She was able to rear her children in comfort and give them such education as the facilities of the county put within her reach."
Nimrod Moore was at Sweetwater, Texas, and far from his large family when he died in 1856. Sarah Jones died July 24, 1868. She is buried at the Moore Cemetery on Standifer Gap Road near Jenkins Road.
From: Western Arkansas Biographies and Historical Memoirs

Marvin-

My third-great-grandfather, Garland Moore, legendarily had a brother
Nimrod, and he (Garland) lived in Roane Co. TN in 1823. I've been in
touch with a couple of people who descend from your Nimrod. I'm going
to include copies of emails from them, and maybe they can help you.

I returned to California from my Arkansas trip on June 23rd, but I have
still not had a chance to really go through all of my photocopies and
notes that I made during the trip.

I visited the Ellsworth Cemetery near Paris, AR where Frederick Jones
Moore is buried. He donated the land for this cemetery and his 1st wife
was
the first person buried there. I obtained an Ellsworth Cemetery book
which
is priceless. First, it contains a photo of Frederick Jones Moore.
Second, it lists spouses and children and where they are buried.
The book has been published 4 or 5 times already and a new version is
apparently
being prepared. For a copy, contact: John Paul Scrudder, 1786 So.
Wilbur,
Walla Walla, WA 99362, (509) 529-4034. Runs about $10. Or, let me know
if
there is anyone you would like me to look up.

Freedman's Bureau, Monticello Twp--found a FRANKLIN MOORE. Well, I'm a
little disappointed with myself on this one--nothing has a date. It was
on microfilm and is a list of Indigent Families of Civil War Veterans.
Shows on pg. 40, Pennington Township, FRANKLIN MOORE, entered service
from
Bradley County, Served in 24th Arkansas Reg't and died. No wife listed,
but lists 1 child under ten years of age. The next entry is for MORDACA
MOORE, Bradley, 24th Ark, in service, wife JULIA MOORE, 1 child under age
10.
A third entry is for MILES S. MOORE, Bradley, 20th Ark, Discharged, wife
MARY E. MOORE with 2 children under age 10.

On page 38, looks like Moro Township had a W. C. MOORE, Bradley, unknown
reg't, in service, wife DOROTHY MOORE, with 5 children under age 10.

As I left Logan County and was driving along Hwy. 22 on my way to
Springdale, I passed Lavaca, AR. Knowing from Steve that Franklin
Nimrod Mooore was buried there--my car swerved off the road looking for
the
cemetery. I found the Oak Valley Cemetery just about a mile south of
Hwy. 22. I was bounding through the cemetery with my camera, chalk and
shave cream
as night was falling. Afraid I too would fall, I snapped every
Moore headstone I could find, but didn't find Franklin's. I did find:

Cleve Moore 1886-1961
Lottie Moore 1891-1979

J. R. Moore June 26, 1849 - July 13, 1923
"Farewell my wife and children all, From you a father Christ
doth call."

Angeline Moore July 1, 1859 - July 15, 1936 Mother

Carrie Moore Sept. 18, 1881 - May 9, 1957 Sister

Oscar Moore 1887-1962 Father
Bertha Moore 1895-1987 Mother

Raymond R. Moore Aug. 24, 1911 - Apr. 24, 1996
Agnes Moore Nov. 17, 1914 - Jan. 21, 1986
Married May 14, 1932

Charles Lewis Moore Sept. 13, 1903 - Apr. 8, 1979
Joyce Sellers Moore Jan. 14, 1920 -
In Gods Hands

Charles M. Moore 1880 - 1962 (Masonic Symbol)
Alberta Moore 1883 - 1937 (Eastern Star)

Hattie M. Moore May 14, 1888 - Sept. 22, 1889 Dau. of M. J. & N. X.

Emmett D. Moore Feb. 13, 1898 - Oct. 8, 1898 Son. of M J. & N. X.

It was plenty dark by the time I snapped the last photo. I was out of
shave cream and water and the perspiration was running in my eyes. The
fireflies were flickering under a huge Oak tree. I managed to get back
to the car without tripping over a stone, post or chain. If any of these
headstones are of interest to you, please let me know. Right now I'm
not sure where your family group sheets are, so I'll let you do the
research.

Well, that's almost everything, except... While I was in the Arkansas
History Commission in Little Rock, I found a cousin. I wear a PAF club
badge which has surname dangles of some of the names I'm researching.
Another patron who I had been talking with, started reading the names
and stopped on STANDIFER. She scurried over to her research book and
turned
to her husband's pedigree chart and declared, "LEROY STANDIFER". My
reply
was, "was married to MARY MOORE". Her husband was descended from their
daughter HARRIETT (HARRITTIE) OBEDIENCE STANDIFER who married DAVE
RHINEHEART. (One of their sons, WILLIAM R. RHINEHEART is buried in the
MOORE Cemetery in Greasy Valley in Logan Co.--this must be a different
cemetery than Ellsworth which was formerly known as MOORE.) The cousin
is JAMES H. MASH and his wife is GINNY. They live at P.O. Box 511 in
Beebe, AR 72012.

The photo I sent you of N. M. Howard's family which was labeled as 1903
was actually taken in 1910. We identified some young folks in the photo
who
were born about that time.

Birth and death records prior to 1914 were practically non-existent in
Arkansas. Wish I could've found more. Let me know if you would like
copies of any of this information.

Steve & Sharon (and other Moore rooters . . .),

Prior to going to Biloxi I had ordered copies of cemetery records for Seiver, Sebastian and Logan Counties from the LDS main library in Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, they don't have an index. I started in Seiver County and went page by page through each and every cemetery. I then moved to Sebastian County and had began going line by line through the hundreds of pages (Sebastian County is large). I had to stop for my 3 month Biloxi trip.

I had promised Donnie that I would continue looking for FRANKLIN NIMROD MOORE's grave 1862 -1902(?). It means so much to him. While I too wanted desperately to find it, it was the central issue for Donnie. So, while I had shifted gears and was working all the
information I had gained while in Chattanooga, I continued to poke around looking for Franklin Nimrod Moore (I too believe that he must
have gone by the name Nimrod). They called and needed me to go down to extend the cemetary films once more and while there I decided to give it another hour or two.

After a lot of pages, my eyes were blurry and I was ready to stop. But, it is like the slot machines, you just know it will be on the next page! I'm surprised that it registered once I actually found it! I saw N. Moore - no dates and thought, "Oh well." And as I was actually moving on, it struck me that the name above his was Henry something. I went back and there was HENRY H. POPE, 9 Feb. 1842 - 10 Oct. 1916. I knew that Mary's dad, Franklin's father-in-law, was last identified in Sebastian County and the dates seemed to fit. As it turns out it was he!

Once I had identified Henry it was real easy to identify the N. MOORE as our Franklin Nimrod Moore. All the graves around them are Moore's and in the mist of them lies our Henry H. Pope. The other Moore graves are in 2-person plots, with couples buried together. The odds are extremely high that our Franklin was buried in one of the dual plots also, with the extra place reserved for his wife - Mary. Since she had remarried soon after (and our family myth that she had in fact stabbed him which later became infected and lead to his death) it is easy to assume that she did not plan on being buried there herself. A little over 10 years later, when her father died in the same area, he was put in her spot.

Naturally, I'll keep digging but I am confident that this is our Franklin Nimrod Moore!!
The other Moore graves in the same area of Oak Valley Cometary, Lavaca Arkansas are:

Also, I think I sent you the grave listing from the Moore Cemetary, Chattanooga, TN earlier. I took pictures of every stone in the cemetary and have identified a lot of the people. There are 48 stones in the cemetary and another handful of cardboard markers awaiting stones (I didn't capture those). Many of them are not listed in the graves listing. Perhaps we need to recheck this part of our records to make sure everything I have been gathering has been passed on. I'll print out Sarah & Nimrod and their children's sheets sometime this week and get them in the mail to you.

In the mean time here are the stones NOT listed in the earlier sheets from the book TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS - MOORE CEMETERY, Chattanooga, TN (not necessarily in order although I will get around to doing that eventually and mapping them in with the earlier ones). Hence, in addition to those already sent add these 30 people:

At Johnson County Courthouse in Clarksville:
A Deed of Conveyance on 18 Jan. 1858 from FREDERICK J. MOORE to JAMES

range
no. Twenty-four West, in Johnson County. Witnessed by R. B. CHITWOOD and
N.

Also in Johnson County, deed dated 19th May 1863, $307 for four acres
"more or less", from THOMAS WHITAKER to FREDIE J. MOORE, DRURY L.
CHITWOOD
and JOHN J. COOK. Witnessed by MARGARET RAINS and WM. WHITAKER.

As I left Logan County and was driving along Hwy. 22 on my way to
Springdale, I passed Lavaca, AR. Knowing from Steve that Franklin
Nimrod Mooore was buried there--my car swerved off the road looking for
the
cemetery. I found the Oak Valley Cemetery just about a mile south of
Hwy. 22. I was bounding through the cemetery with my camera, chalk and
shave cream
as night was falling. Afraid I too would fall, I snapped every
Moore headstone I could find, but didn't find Franklin's. I did find:

Cleve Moore 1886-1961
Lottie Moore 1891-1979

J. R. Moore June 26, 1849 - July 13, 1923
"Farewell my wife and children all, From you a father Christ
doth call."

Angeline Moore July 1, 1859 - July 15, 1936 Mother

Carrie Moore Sept. 18, 1881 - May 9, 1957 Sister

Oscar Moore 1887-1962 Father
Bertha Moore 1895-1987 Mother

Raymond R. Moore Aug. 24, 1911 - Apr. 24, 1996
Agnes Moore Nov. 17, 1914 - Jan. 21, 1986
Married May 14, 1932

Charles Lewis Moore Sept. 13, 1903 - Apr. 8, 1979
Joyce Sellers Moore Jan. 14, 1920 -
In Gods Hands

Charles M. Moore 1880 - 1962 (Masonic Symbol)
Alberta Moore 1883 - 1937 (Eastern Star)

Hattie M. Moore May 14, 1888 - Sept. 22, 1889 Dau. of M. J. & N. X.

Emmett D. Moore Feb. 13, 1898 - Oct. 8, 1898 Son. of M J. & N. X.

It was plenty dark by the time I snapped the last photo. I was out of
shave cream and water and the perspiration was running in my eyes. The
fireflies were flickering under a huge Oak tree. I managed to get back
to the car without tripping over a stone, post or chain. If any of these
headstones are of interest to you, please let me know. Right now I'm
not sure where your family group sheets are, so I'll let you do the
research.

Well, that's almost everything, except... While I was in the Arkansas
History Commission in Little Rock, I found a cousin. I wear a PAF club
badge which has surname dangles of some of the names I'm researching.
Another patron who I had been talking with, started reading the names
and stopped on STANDIFER. She scurried over to her research book and
turned
to her husband's pedigree chart and declared, "LEROY STANDIFER". My
reply
was, "was married to MARY MOORE". Her husband was descended from their
daughter HARRIETT (HARRITTIE) OBEDIENCE STANDIFER who married DAVE
RHINEHEART. (One of their sons, WILLIAM R. RHINEHEART is buried in the
MOORE Cemetery in Greasy Valley in Logan Co.--this must be a different
cemetery than Ellsworth which was formerly known as MOORE.) The cousin
is JAMES H. MASH and his wife is GINNY. They live at P.O. Box 511 in
Beebe, AR 72012.

The photo I sent you of N. M. Howard's family which was labeled as 1903
was actually taken in 1910. We identified some young folks in the photo
who
were born about that time.

Birth and death records prior to 1914 were practically non-existent in
Arkansas. Wish I could've found more. Let me know if you would like
copies of any of this information.

Steve & Sharon (and other Moore rooters . . .),

Prior to going to Biloxi I had ordered copies of cemetery records for
Seiver, Sebastian and Logan Counties from the LDS main library in Salt
Lake City. Unfortunately, they don't have an index. I started in
Seiver County and went page by page through each and every cemetery. I
then moved to Sebastian County and had began going line by line
through the hundreds of pages (Sebastian County is large). I had to
stop for my 3 month Biloxi trip.

I had promised Donnie that I would continue looking for FRANKLIN
NIMROD MOORE's grave 1862 -1902(?). It means so much to him. While I
too wanted desperately to find it, it was the central issue for
Donnie. So, while I had shifted gears and was working all the
information I had gained while in Chattanooga, I continued to poke
around looking for Franklin Nimrod Moore (I too believe that he must
have gone by the name Nimrod). They called and needed me to go down to
extend the cemetary films once more and while there I decided to give
it another hour or two.

After a lot of pages, my eyes were blurry and I was ready to stop.
But, it is like the slot machines, you just know it will be on the
next page! I'm surprised that it registered once I actually found it!
I saw N. Moore - no dates and thought, "Oh well." And as I was
actually moving on, it struck me that the name above his was Henry
something. I went back and there was HENRY H. POPE, 9 Feb. 1842 - 10
Oct. 1916. I knew that Mary's dad, Franklin's father-in-law, was last
identified in Sebastian County and the dates seemed to fit. As it
turns out it was he!

Once I had identified Henry it was real easy to identify the N. MOORE
as our Franklin Nimrod Moore. All the graves around them are Moore's
and in the mist of them lies our Henry H. Pope. The other Moore graves
are in 2-person plots, with couples buried together. The odds are
extremely high that our Franklin was buried in one of the dual plots
also, with the extra place reserved for his wife - Mary. Since she had
remarried soon after (and our family myth that she had in fact stabbed
him which later became infected and lead to his death) it is easy to
assume that she did not plan on being buried there herself. A little
over 10 years later, when her father died in the same area, he was put
in her spot.

Naturally, I'll keep digging but I am confident that this is our
Franklin Nimrod Moore!!
The other Moore graves in the same area of Oak Valley Cometary, Lavaca
Arkansas are:

Also, I think I sent you the grave listing from the Moore Cemetary,
Chattanooga, TN earlier. I took pictures of every stone in the
cemetary and have identified a lot of the people. There are 48 stones
in the cemetary and another handful of cardboard markers awaiting
stones (I didn't capture those). Many of them are not listed in the
graves listing. Perhaps we need to recheck this part of our records to
make sure everything I have been gathering has been passed on. I'll
print out Sarah & Nimrod and their children's sheets sometime this
week and get them in the mail to you.

In the mean time here are the stones NOT listed in the earlier sheets
from the book TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS - MOORE CEMETERY, Chattanooga, TN
(not necessarily in order although I will get around to doing that
eventually and mapping them in with the earlier ones). Hence, in
addition to those already sent add these 30 people:

  7. BOB MOORE (Patwarnes)
*****This is what I have found in two different articles that I have on a
    Nimrod Moore.

    1. "Nimrod Moore divorce Sarah Jones in Hamilton Co., TN in 1833. Sarah
    and
children lived in Hamilton Co., and show on the 1850 census with Sarah as
head of Household. Nimrod reported to have died abt 1856. Unknown
    location.

    2. This query had no name on it, but came from Bryan, TX.

Nimrod, Fredrick Jones, and James Marion migrated to Arkansas from
    Tennessee
before the civil war. All three were brothers who migrated to Johnson
    Con.,
Arkansas from Hamilton Co., Tenn. between 1850 and 1860. Fredrick and
    James
served in the military during the war, with James dying of typhoid in
    1864.
Nimrod died that same year, but it is not known if his death was war or
military related. Fredrick survived the war and adopted James' son, John
Fredrick Moore. Nimrod's sons, James and William Taylor Moore were
    adopted
by his widow's second husband, William Hall.
