Charles was born Tjeerd Dijkstra on 15 October 1873 in the country village of Menaldum, F riesland, Nethjerlands, son of the 26 years old, unmarried Klaaske Tjeerds Bosma. He was named after his maternal grandfather, Tjeerd Jans Bosma. Exactly a year later, on his first birthday, October 15, 1874 his mother, the 27 years old seamstress (naaister) Klaaske Tjeerds Bosma, married in Menaldum the one year younger laborer Jacobus Dijkstra, who legitimized at the same time Klaaske's son Tjeerd.
On October 15 1882, his brother Jan was born in Menaldum, and on July 30, 1886 sister Jantje (called Jennie in the US). On August 1, 1886 his brother Jan Dijkstra died in Menaldum, at the age of 3 years.
On October 5, 1893 Tjeird J. Dykstra (20 years old, no occupation) arrived without any relative on the S.S. Veendam, which departed from Plymouth, England, at the port of New York, Ellis Island. His destination was the "Dutch" city of Pella, Iowa, founded in 1847 by 800 Dutch immigrants led by Dominee Hendrik (Henry) P. Scholte. Pella had in 1890 2,408 people, in 1900 2,623. On April 16, 1894 his father Jakobus Dykstra (45, laborer), mother Klaske (46), and sister Jantje (7) arrived on the S.S.Edam from Amsterdam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. Their destination was also Pella in Iowa.
On February 2, 1900 the 26 years old farmer Charles Dykstra married in LaMoille, Washington Township, Marshall County, Iowa the five years older Mary J. On January 13, 1902 their son Marion J. Groover Dykstra was born in LaMoille, Washington Township, Marshall County, Iowa.Five days later, on January 18, 1902 his mother Mary J. Groover Dykstra died in LaMoille and he was raised in Marshalltown by his grandparents Eli Groover (1835-1922, Iowa) and Elizabeth N. Campbell (1848-1923, Iowa).
On June 16, 1903 Charles Dykstra remarried in Jasper County, Iowa the 10 years younger Elizabeth (Lizzie) Moes, who was born in the Dutch province Groningen. In 1905 Charley Dykstra (31, farmer) was living with his wife Elizabeth, their daughter Jennie and his parents at a rented farm in rural Richland Township.
