The younger years of James' life was spent upon the farm of his father, Abraham. He came to Homer, IL in 1840 with less than $1,000 in cash. James became properous, as evidenced by the statement that his real estate included six hundred acres of some of the finest farming land in Central Illinois, provided with good improvements, including a fine brick home, a barn and all the conveniences for general farming, together with the proper feeding and care of livestock. James engaged in breeding Norman and Clydesdale horses, and had a few sheep, with choice grades of cattle and hogs. He was constantly busy looking after the stock and generally superintending the estate. James' political viewpoint was of Republican principles and a believer in the Christian faith.
