ABILENE Lloyd Boxum, 89, died Oct. 22 at the Village Manner. He was born April 1, 1920, near Downs, the son of Albert and Lena (VanDonge) Boxum. Growing to manhood in the area, he attended local schools. He had farmed and owned and operated the Gamble's store in Downs before entering the Army to serve in the South Pacific in 1942. After being discharged from the Army, he married June Cary on June 17, 1945. In 1956, they moved to Great Bend, where he was an auctioneer and real estate broker until retiring in 1982. In 1995, they moved to Abilene to make their home.
Mr. Boxum was a member of the First Christian churches in Great Bend and Abilene.
Survivors include his wife, June, of Abilene; two daughters, Beverly Sutter of Abilene and Belva Hauxwell of Hays; two sons, Bruce Boxum of Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Brice Boxum of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Bertha Hofer of Osborne; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
The family received friends Saturday afternoon at the Danner Funeral Home in Abilene. Funeral service was Monday morning from the Downs Christian Church. Burial followed in the Downs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions in his name be given to the Abilene or Downs First Christian churches. They may be left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home. Domoney Funeral Home was in charge of Downs arrangements.
