KEITH LEWIS, Whose portrait appears in this work, was born May 2, 1826, in Morgan Co., Ohio. His great-grandfather came from Holland to America about fifteen years before the Revolution, and settled in New Lancashire, Pa. Here he engaged in the smithing business for many years, when he moved to Huntingdon Co., where he died in 1810. He had served as blacksmith in the Revolutionary war. Mr. Keith's grandfather, Peter, was a blacksmith and farmer, and moved to Morgan Co., Ohio, in 1814, and had a family of twelve children. He came to Rockford, Winnebago Co., Ill., in 1836, at that time containing only two or three houses, and located on the east side of the river, just below the present site of the water power. He died, aged 81 years, 4 months. His father was born in 1801, in Huntington Co., Pa. Came to Morgan Co., Ohio, with father, in 1814. July 6, 1842, came to Laporte, Ind., and built a cabin on the same lot on which his residence now stands.

His family consists of nine sons and five daughters, all of whom are married and still living. He married first, Mary Spencer, by whom he had four sons, the youngest of whom is the subject of this sketch, being only twelve days old at the time of his mother's death. His second wife was Nancy O'Hara, and by her he had ten sons and daughters. His third was Mrs. Nancy H. Jessup. His children are as follows: Joseph married Jane Bunker; Elisha married Amanda Thomberg; Peter married Sarah J. Thornton; Lewis married Catherine Brown; Bolsar married Catherine Banks; Mary married Henry Crane; Julia A. married Lewis Parker; Maria married Edward Cox; E. Wesley married Sarah Prian; Dennis T. married Catherine Earnest; Francis M. married Martha McLane; Margaret married Geo. Huckens; W. Riley married Sarah Crane; Ariadna married Amos Taylor. On the first day of March, 1837, Mr. K. landed in Winnebago Co., after a fourteen days' journey from Laporte, Ind., a distance of 150 miles, during which time snow fell to the depth of one foot. He was at that time ten years of age, and came with friends to live with his grandfather, who died the following year, since which time he has been emphatically the architect of his own fortune. With no one to depend upon, he has by the native energy of his character, wrought out a handsome fortuue, owning 1,400 acres of land in this vicinity, and 1,000 in Iowa, with the necessary additional means for managing such a property. He also conducts a mercantile business in Cherry Valley. His first wife was Catherine Brown, from Ohio; she died in 1862, leaving three children: Lewis W., Luther L. and Roswell C. Married Miss Louisa M. Farley, from Ohio, in 1864; have two children; Julia Florence, born July 14, 1869; Estella, March 31, 1871.

History of Boone County

KEITH, Lewis, who is now living retired, at Rockford, Ill., was for many years well known throughout this part of the State as a dealer in stock, and also as the owner of large tracts of land. Born May 2, 1826, in Morgan County, Ohio, the son of Lewis and Mary (Spencer) Keith. Mr. Keith was taken, when six years old, to Licking County, Ohio, by his grandparents, Blisha and Elizabeth (Wagoner) Spencer, of Huntingdon County, Pa., his mother having died when he was twenty-three days old. After three years spent in Licking County, the family r?moved to LaPorte County,, Ind., and March 1, 1837, They came to Flora Township, Boone County, Ill., where the mother died. Young Keith was thus reared by his grandfather, Elisha Spencer, who died in 1838, being buried in Flora Cemetery, as were also the paternal grandparents of Lewis, who died at the age of eighty-one years. Lewis Keith then went to live with his maternal grandmother until he was twenty-three years old, at which time she went to Iowa, where her death occurred. Joseph Keith, a brother of Lewis, eight years his senior, went to Washington as ayoung man, and his death occurred there about ten years ago, while another brother, Peter Keith, who is two years older, now re?sides in San Jose, Cal. Lewis Keith as a young man purchased forty acres of land for the sum of $50 and this he later sold for $80, considering that he had made a good bargain. After his grandmother's death, he secured her old place, and started stock-raising and dealing, becoming one of the best-known traders In the county, and often paying as high as 3 per cent per month for the use of money with which to buy stock. Early in life he began buying land, paying all the way from $1.25 to $45 an acre for it, and at one time owned 1,500 acres, nearly all of which was in Flora Township. His old home place, where he resided until 1896, is now the site of the Flora church. Mr. Keith was also engaged in mercantile enterprises for some time, for fifteen years being the owner of a store at Cherry Valley, which his son managed for him. He also owned a store at Fairdale for some years, and owned valuable land in Kansas, Dakota, Minnesota, and other sections. In all his enterprises he proved himself a shrewd, capable business man, but he still found time to serve his community in numerous ways, and as a public spirited and upright citizen, had the respect and esteem of all who knew him.
On May 2, 1849, Lewis Keith was married to Catherine Brown, who died in 1863, leaving three children: Wesley, on the old home farm; Luther, a contractor of California; and Roswell, who operates a part of the old home farm. Mr. Keith's second marriage was to Louisa Farley, who survives and makes her home with him at Rockford. There were three children born of this union, namely: Florence, the wife of E. D. Reynolds, an attorney of Rockford, and a Republican member of the State Legislature; Estella, at home; and Mabel, who married LeRoy Burt, an electrician of Bedford, Iowa.
