Cincinnati Times-Star, Friday, December 5, 1902, p. 1, cols. 1 & 2 (sub 'Man Ground to Pieces Under Wheels of Train.'): "Bellevue, (Ky.), Was the Scene of Shocking Accident - Victim Was "Crack" Thornton, a Retired Democratic Politician of Campbell County. - Bellevue, Ky. was the scene of a shocking railroad accident early Friday. The victim was James Thornton, a retired Democratic politician, who was better known as "Crack" Thornton to his friends. Thornton was walking across the track at Taylor avenue when the eastbound C. & O. freight train came along. The engineer, as he rounded the corner, saw a man ahead, and whistled, but the man did not seem to hear. He was prevented from seeing the train also by the umbrella that he was carrying. The engineer made all efforts to stop the train, but the distance was too short, and in another moment Thornton was run down. When the train was stopped it was found that the man was unrecognizable. He had almost been ground to pieces, and the train had to be separated to get at the remains. Chief of Police Ratliff and City Clerk Emig picked up the severed remains and had them placed in an express wagon in which they were carried to Betz's undertaking establishment. The scene of the accident is at a curve of the road, where the track is at a slight distance above the street and the crossing is reached by a flight of stone steps. The engineer could not have seen the man till he was almost upon him. Thornton was at one time very active in Campbell county (Ky.) politics, but a few years ago he was sunstruck and had to be taken care of in a retreat. After that he lived a quiet life. His home was at 68 Locust street, Bellevue, near the scene of the accident. He was 55 years old, and leaves a widow and a grown son."
