Cincinnati Times-Star, Wednesday, September 8, 1915, p. 13, col. 1 (sub 'CHARTER MEMBER OF ELKS' LODGE DEAD'): "JOHN THORNTON, born in Newport 66 years ago, died at his home in Southgate, following a long illness. He was for many years engaged in the ice business before the introduction of artificial ice. It was cut from his ponds in East Newport. He was the last of four brothers, all of whom were born in Newport. Newport Lodge of Elks, of which he was a charter member, will visit his home Wednesday night to hold the regular service. He is survived by a widow, three sons and three daughters. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon with services at the residence at 3:30 o'clock."
