Vermelding: Bevestiging huwelijk van 15 januari 1797, Sint Johannesga
- Delfstrahuizen - Rohel - Rotster
Man: Gerrit Wichers, Rohel
Vrouw: Lysbert Geerts, Sint Johannesga
Gestandaardiseerde namen: GERRIT WIEGERS en LIESBET GEERTS
At the death of daughter Aaltje (1815) his name is recorded as Gerrit Wichers de Groot.
The following from the records of P. Hakze (Rootsweb.com)
Gerrit is the third child and the second son. Remarkable is that he wasn't
named for his paternal grandfather Abraham Geerts Twent (the next son did
so) Was he named for his uncle Gerrit Abrams Twent, born between 1738 and
1748, who might have recently died?! (This could very well be the case, be-
cause there hasn't been found any trace of Gerrit Abrams Twent, such as a
marriage).
Gerrit Wychers never used a surname and didn't adopt a surname (de Groot) in
1811 because he had passed away in January 1809. His father Wycher Abrahams and his brother Abraham Wychers never used a surname in Friesland (after 1782) too till 1811. Gerrit's brother Jan Wychers used till 1811 the surname of their mother, Mulder. In 1811 Jan Wychers and Abraham Wychers adopted "De
Groot"(= The Great") as surname. It's not unlikely that Jan, who was seven
and a half years older than his brother Abraham, chose for this surname, and
that Abraham followed him. But on the other hand: Abraham accepted at mairie
St. Johannesga already on page 39 the surname De Groot and Jan did this
much later, on page 223. Did they have a tall figure or does De Groot have
another significance in this case? Very probably we'll never know.
Turfmaker Gerrit Wiegers died at the age of 45 years, leaving behind his wife
Lijsbeth Geerts and five children. Source: Successieregisters 1806-1811,
Friesland regio 5, DTB 592. Extracts of this death record are added as appendix
to the marriages of Gerrit's daughters Grietje and Jantje Gerrits de Groot in
resp. 1828 and 1829 and of his son Wycher Gerrits de Groot in 1832.
It's remarkable that Gerrit's father Wieger Abrahams died only six days
before him on 18-01-1809 and at the same place, St. Johannesga. Was there
a coherence, such as a cholera epidemic, notorious in the wet peatdigging
areas?!
In January 1797 Gerrit Wichers resides in the peatdiggers hamlet Rohel,
gemeente Schoterland, provincie Friesland, NL. In December 1797 he lives
in Delfstrahuizen, also a peatdiggers hamlet, in the utter southwest of
Schoterland (today in the municipality Lemsterland). It's lying on the south-
east corner's shore of the Tjeukemeer, a lake. In February 1801, November
1804, May 1807 and January 1809 Gerrit resides at St. Johannesga, also a peat-
diggers hamlet in Schoterland. There is no doubt that Gerrit was a peatdigger
and turfmaker during his whole life.
Gerrit Wychers didn't become a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of
St. Johannesga, Rotsterhaule, Rohel and Delfstrahuizen. Strange, especially
because his father and two brothers did indeed. Gerrit's wife Lijsbeth has
still to be investigated on this issue. 04/2006
