The census lists a few more discrepancy when compared to the other censuses. The ages definitely do not correlate. Also, a female by the name of "Adalaide" appears, unlike the last census. This woman may be Permelia with the census taker using her middle name. Austin was listed as being 65 years old, born in South Carolina, a farmer by trade with real property valued at $300 and personal property worth $100. His wife, Rebecca was also listed as being 60 years, born in South Carolina, and a housekeeper. The following children were added to the census with their respective ages: Sophia (25), Adalaide (23), Montery (20), and Columbus (8).
In the 1830 census, Austin's family is listed living in the Eastern District and having a wife with a daughter under the age of 5. This little girl would be Mary. What is not understood is the non-existence of their firstborn and son, Baylis. He is not listed with the rest of the family.
Austin appeared again in the 1840 census of Pickens County. On this census, several unknown children were recorded (two males and three females). What is interesting is the fact that now one boy was born between 1826 and 1830, and two girls were born between 1821 and 1825. Take note, these children were not listed in the 1830 census. Also, the unknown girl who was recorded in the 1830 census was longer listed in this census: one male under the age of 5, two males between the ages of 5 and 9, one male between the ages of 10 and 14, and one male between 30 and 39 years old (Austin). As for females, three were born under the age of 5, two females between the ages of 5 and 9, two more females between the ages of 15 and 19, and one female between 30 and 39 years old (Rebecca).
In the 1850 census, Austin's occupation was in farming and he owned 260 acres of land. Rebecca was at the age of 40 and the following children were listed with their ages: Baylis B. (19), Maria L. (16), Elvira Jane (15), Sophia A. (13), Martin Van Buren (12), Elizabeth (10), Valerie G. (9), Stephen A. Reid (7), Permelia A. (6), Theresa Monterey (4) and Fredrick G. (3).
Some of the children moved on to start their own families. One girl, Clarissa M., is listed here but not in the 1850 census. She was born the approximately the same time as Frederick G. (although the census taker for this year put 11 years old as the age for Frederick) when comparing it to the 1850 census. It appears that Clarissa was more of a relative than a daughter. Austin was 60 years old and a farmer with real property valued at $1,000 and personal property worth $400. The following people lived under this household with their respective ages: Rebecca (50), Sophia A. (23), Velena G. (19), Permelia A. (15), Clarissa M. (13), Frederick G. (11), Anetta (Jul 1860). All were born in Pickens County.
