Bio: Giles was the son of Mathieu Allegre, born 1659 in Velaux, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France and died 21 Jan 1707 in Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. Giles mother, Anne Calais Calix dit Fustier, was the daughter of Jean "Fustier" Calais and Susanne Seguin Calais of France.
Giles was a French Huguenot and one of the founders of Manakin Town, in King William Parish, Virginia located about 20 miles west of Richmond, on the south side of James River.
His first marriage 21 July 1709 in London, England was to Elizabeth (Beare) Marriott, widow of Thomas Marriott. Elizabeth's brother, Charles Beare, drowned on a voyage from Barbados to Virginia. By his will dated 10 April 1727, probated in London 21 Jun 1729, he left his whole estate to his sister Elizabeth Allegre, of the parish of St. Martin's in the Fields, London, who was his sole executrix.
As his second wife, Giles Allegre married Judith M. Cox. They were married 27 June 1730 by James Marye at the home Mr. Henry Wood, the county clerk, in Goochland Co., VA. This was the first marriage recorded in Goochland County.
Giles was a physician and in 1740, obtained the first license to operate a tavern at his home on 190 acres, then in Goochland County. Allegre's Tavern has stood within the boundaries of three counties: Goochland, Albemarle, and Fluvanna. Located on old Three Notched Road and Mechunk Creek, it is one of Fluvanna's oldest remaining houses.
At the time of his death, Giles bequeathed a total of 2,600 acres to his descendants.
