Birth: 2 Oct 1710 Switzerland
Death: 28 Apr 1760 (aged 49) Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, USA
Burial: Hebron Moravian Cemetery, Lebanon, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, USA
Memorial #: 34686652
Bio: Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
Deed Bk: R Pg: 28-32 - Children of Ulrich Stevens/Stephe deceased acknowledge receipt of funds from father's estate & sell land. Some sell land to George Wampler/Wampfler who states he is a son-in-law to Ulrich. Other stated children in land deeds are Henry/Henrich, Annamaria Wice (Weis in German it states), Michael, & John/Jannes.
Surname is indexed as Stevens and various spellings appear in land docs on these pages including Stevens/Steven/Steaven/Stephe/Steffe/Staffe. It refers to Steffe and Staffe as in German which explains variations in names as they are anglicized. First name was spelled Ulrich and Ulrick.

The parish register of Hoffen Reformed Ch. (on the French-held Alsatian side of the Duchy of Zweibrucken) has numerous references to Ulrichâs family. His father Johann Stephan died 5/2/1730 at the age of 54 years and 9 months, described as the former schoolmaster of Hoffen. On 5/21/1737 Ulrich married Anna Maria Schirmer of Hoffen, daughter of a goose herder. That Sept. 9 they had a Johann Michel whom they lost on 10/25. On 12/3/1738 they had Maria Elisabetha (who would marry George Wampler in Pennsylvania). On 1/23/41 they had Anna Maria (who presumably died young as they had another by that name in 1750 who married George Weiss). All three baptisms were sponsored by a âJost Stephanâ of Betschdorff and later Rittershofen, described as hinderass and schirmer; whether he was Ulrichâs brother or uncle was not specified. As of 1737 Ulrich was described as master tailor and hinderass. Ulrichâs manumission and voyage of emigration are not found in extant records. (See Annette Kunselman Burgert, Eighteenth Century Immigrants from the Northern Alsace to America (Camden, ME: Picton Press, 1992, p.484.)
In Pennsylvania Ulrich eventually switched to the Moravian church (at Lebanon and Heidelberg Twps.), which liked to keep basic information on families. The identification between this Pennsylvania Ulrich and his Hoffen namesake is proven by direct references in the Moravian records to the coupleâs home in Alsace, the name of Anna Mariaâs father, the year of their marriage, and their daughter Elizabethâs precise birthdate. The Moravian records add seven children (all American-born). (See Burgert, p.485.)
The Moravian profile also states that Ulrich was born at Affoltern im Emmental in the Swiss canton of Bern (confirmed by direct inspection of the record.) This in turn explains why Ulrich, Jost and Johann were called hinderass Å a term for a foreigner whoâd been granted civic rights. In a parish register at Sumiswald in Affoltern (lower left of page), on 10/12/1710 an âUllrich Steffanâ 10/12/1710 was baptized by Hans Steffan and Elsbeth Graff.
