Bio: Peter was a Pennsylvania Dutch farmer from Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. In the published obituaries of most of his children, they were shown as having been born in Lower Mahanoy Township.
On Jan 8, 1836 Jackson Township was formed from part of Lower Mahanoy Township, including where the Michael farm was located. Births after that date are shown as in Jackson Township. In the 1840 federal census, there is listed just one Peter Michael in Jackson Township, of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He is not in the 1850 census for that area, so may likely be this Peter.
It is known that the entire Peter Michael family, except for his married daughter Sarah Zartman, came to the Brookville, Illinois area in the summer of 1846. This is documented in a booklet from Grace Evangelical Church of Brookville, Illinois published for its Centennial Anniversary in 1946. Peter and his wife Elizabeth were charter members and founders of this church, buried in its cemetery. Back in Northumberland County, PA, in Jackson Township, the family belonged to the Reformed congregation.
The Michael farm was in section 20 of Lima Township, in Carroll County, Illinois, and is still owned by descendants. In addition to farming, Peter was adept at watch repair.
Peter's younger sister may be the Lydia Michael (1812-1883) who, in 1833, married Aaron Bowers (1813-1884) and lived in the Forreston, Ogle County, Illinois area.
