Andrew Jackson & Sarah (Clay) Gilliam
loaded a few belongings and three
children into their wagon.
The children were Eleazer, age 7;
Rebecca Ann, age 3; and Martha who
had not had her first birthday.
They had one team of oxen, two milk
cows and thirteen sheep. They joined
a train and headed west from
St. Joseph, Missouri, in the spring
of 1847.
There was a total of 30 sheep in the
train.
Problems with Indians and wolves
developed as the train moved across
the plains.
At one location the wolves stampeded
the sheep. The men were able to gather
many of the sheep into a controlled
group.
They found the missing sheep, to their
dismay, in a rock canyon surrounded by
the wolves. Ammunition was scarce and
the wolves were numerous. It was felt
that the Indians were a greater threat
than the loss of the sheep;
consequently, the men had to leave the
sheep to their fate.
The train moved on.
Sarah Gilliam told, after arriving
in Oregon, that the women were so
despondent that they would beg their
men to return home and give up the
long journey.
The women and the children grew
tired and would cry. Mrs. Tremble
became the real captain among the
women. She would move through the
train, give them encouragement and
finally make them ashamed of
themselves for being such weaklings
when their husbands were doing
so much.
One of the Gilliam oxen died. They
paired one of the milk cows with
the remaining oxen and moved on.
They arrived at the Whitman Mission
place in October 1847.
The rainy season had started.
Andrew was considering spending the
winter there.
The Indians in that area were becoming
quite hostile.
Sarah Gilliam felt that they should
move on.
She was right. The Indian massacre
at the Whitman Mission took place on
29 November, one month after they left.
After arriving in the Willamette Valley,
the Gilliams settled in Polk County and
took up a Donation Land Claim five
miles southwest of the present site of
Dallas, Oregon. They set to work curring
and hewing logs for a cabin.
Mud was plastered in the cracks to keep
the cold out. Times were very hard that
winter. If it had not been for the
kindness of the Indians in the area,
they might not have survived.
Andrew Gilliam was kind to the Indians
and made friends with them. When trouble
was brewing, his friend, Chief McKai,
would sneak around and tell him of any
impending danger.
Andrew and Sarah remained on that
farm until they died.
Their family grew in Oregon.
Ten additional children came to join
the three that crossed the plains.
