Biography

Dietrich Verli was a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).
Born 29 Jul 1695 Bellefosse, Ban de la Roche, Alsace, France.[1]
Bapt 31 Jul 1695 Bellefosse, Ban de la Roche, Alsace, France.[2]
Sponsors: Didier Claude Mareschal of Bellemont, David Verli of Bellefosse, Marie Claide, daughter of Cladon Claude of Bellemont[3]
He married Elisabetha Rupp on 15 February 1722. [4] [5]
He sailed to America on the Princess Augusta and arrived in Pennsylvania on 16 September 1736. [6]
Dietrich Wehrli (aka Wierly, Verli) was born on 25 July 1695 in the German-speaking village of Bellefosse, Alsace, France. He was baptized on 31 July 1695 in the neighboring, slightly larger, village of Schönenberg (Belmont), both in what is now Molsbach District, Bas-Rhin department, Alsace, Grand Est, France. Like many in these villages that had been ruled by German Protestant Wittlesbach rulers[7] in the 16-17th Centuries, before being annexed by the French Monarchy, Dietrich (or Didier in French) and his family had converted to the "Reformed Religion," being Protestant Christians influenced by the teachings of French-theologian Jean Calvin. Alsace is adjacent to Switzerland where Jean Calvin had fled from religious persecution under France's Roman Catholic kings.
Dietrich Wherli / Verli was the son of Hans Wehrli and Marguerite Neuvillers. [8][9]
Given the bi-lingual nature of his homeland (with many local dialects) it's not surprising that Dietrich / Didier's names have many alternate spellings, dating from a time when literacy was rare. On his Find A Grave memorial the manager has stated: [10]
" I have been contacted about the spelling of this name; this [spelled "Wierly"] is a family name and this is the way it has been handed down to me; the family originated in the Alsace, France area."
"I have found the following spellings for this name on ancestry.com: Wearley-Wearly-Weerley-Wehrle-Wehrley-Wehrly-Werley-Werlie-Werly-Wherley-Wherly-Whirley-Whorley-Wierli-Wierly-Worley-Worrely."
And this does not include French where the "W" becomes a "V," leading to "Verli" or "Verly". The local Reformed Church register, in Alsace, France, for example, called him "Didier, fils de Jean VERLI et de Marguerite NEUVILLERS..." [8]
On 15 February 1722, Dietrich Wherli married Elizabeth Madeline Rupp (1699-1736) in Belmont, Alsace, France. [11] [12]
They had at least 3 children:
1Anna Maria (Wehrly) Werle (1726-)
2Johan Georg Wehrley (1728-1790)
3Henry "Heinrich" Wehrly (1731-1837)
In 1736 the Wehrli family fled Alsace to the English province of Pennsylvania in America, emigrating via the Protestant-ruled German Palatinate, aboard the ship "Princess Augusta". [13] They settled on a farm in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
Elizabeth (Rupp) Wehrli (aka Wierly or Verli) passed away there shortly after their arrival in the winter of 1736 at just 37 years old. Her husband survived her passing for another dozen years. Dietrich Wherli / Wierly passed away in 1749, most-likely on the family farm in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
