Biography
John Briggs[1],[2],[3],[4],[5] was born about 1615; Came to America on the ship "Blesing" 1635; of Lynn and Sandwich MA., Inventory of his estate was taken 1 June 1641.[6][7]
John Briggs was apparently born in England, a son of Henry Briggs.
Christening 8 Apr 1618 St. James, Clerkenwell Parish, Islington, London, England [8]
How he came to North America is unknown; he may be the John Briggs who came on the "Blessing" in 1635, but that may have been another John Briggs.
He is first mentioned by Governor Bradford in his Plymouth Colony Records when he was deeded, on 16 April 1640, seven and one half acres of land at Sandwich with the original proprietors of the township.[9]
On 1 June 1641, at the General Court of Plymouth, his widow was granted the administration of his estate. The names of the children of John Briggs are recorded in the inventory taken of his estate by Edward Dillinghame and Thomas Tupper:
"And the said Katherne Briggs Doth prmise and give unto her two children two cowes vis' the yeonger white cowe to her sonne Samuel and the brown heiffer to her Daughter Sarah to be kept for them and their increase and stock to be theires from this tyme forward..."[7]
The inventory of stock and household goods included:
"three melch cowes, 1 heiffer, 1 bullock and two bull calves"[7]
