Bio: Capt. John Wood died in the Battle of Leghorn off the coast of Italy in 1655. His merchant ship was The Peregrine. He was the Master-at-Arms on The Hector which ran between the Mass. Bay Colony, Boston and other ports and London. He carried cargo for the Winthrops throughout his seafaring career.
His death and burial in Italy represented a return to his roots in many ways, as the Wood line descends from Guillaume Bosco/Dubois, a knight of the 9th Crusade, who returned home to Europe with a Christianized Syrian wife. His ancestors originated in Calabria and Piemonte, Italy. Over the generations, they settled in Britain and translated their surname directly to Wood.
