Notities over Thomas O‘Marra Weir

Thomas Wier
Birth: 1735 County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
Death: unknown Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
Burial: Cookstown Cemetery, Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
Memorial #: 110288334
Bio: Thomas Wier, son of James Wier, married Elizabeth Faulkner by 1760. Her father was "a farmer living at the waterside of Londonderry." Thomas and Elizabeth Wier settled at Ballynagilly, three leagues northeast of Cookstown, where they died.

They lived near Belnagilla in Lissan Parish and were members of Cookstown First Presbyterian Church, founded 1646. This church relocated to Loy Hill on January 4, 1763, where it has been ever since. The address is 27 Fairhill Rd, Cookstown BT80 8AG, UK. The Wiers were members there in 1783 when daughter Nancy married James Boyd.

In a letter dated 28 May 1835 his son Thomas Wier Jr. stated that they lived in Lissan Parish at Ballynagilla 3 leagues from Cookstown, County Tyrone, not far from a place known as Crack Anya or Craik Anya, so called for an ancient legendary woman carried away by the faeries and whose spirit was said to appear as a banshee and wail to portend the death of her descendants who comprised most of the indiginous population and apparently did not include the Wiers. Thomas Wier wrote of the legend but every one of the published transcripts of his original letter omit that part.

Some descendants gave the birth date of 1708 for Thomas Wier Sr., but the source of this date is unknown and thought to be some one's guess. Since three of his four children are known to have been born in the 1760s, a birthdate of 1735-40 seems more likely.
He probably died 1796-1803. Whether he is the "Thomas Weir" shown on the flax growers list in Tyrone in 1796 is unknown.

The four children of Thomas Wier and Elizabeth Faulkner were:
1 Samuel Wier married (probably Ann Nancy? Hamilton, niece of James Boyd) may have died in Ireland though some say South Carolina
2 Agnes (Nancy) Wier born c1760-64 married August 4, 1783 at Cookstown Presbyterian Church to James Boyd (from Carland Presbyterian Church) Some descendants estimated her birth as c1743 but it is very unlikely she was 40 years old when she married since she had a large family.
3 Thomas Wier Jr. born 1763 married Mary Withrow, 10 children
4 James Wier born 1769 married Mary Hamilton (niece of James Boyd)

Samuel Wier was probably born circa 1761 or before Nancy. He apparently stayed in Ireland and inherited his parents' property. According to Hamilton family letters, James Wier's brother married Mary Hamilton's sister and never left Ireland, and this would seem to be Samuel. TEN TRIBES OF WIER by W.S. Wier and Wier-Boyd Family Letters say Samuel came to South Carolina also. DNA suggests he may have been the Samuel Wier who died 1810 in Laurens County, S.C., leaving a son Samuel H. Wier.

Griffith‘s Valuation of Tyrone (1848-64) shows only three Weirs (no Wiers) in Lissan Parish, and only one (Margaret) at Ballynagilla who could be an unmarried daughter of Samuel Wier or widow of one Samuel‘s sons. Or she could be Thomas Wier's old aunt Margaret Wier, unmarried, described in the above-referenced letter as "a woman well acquainted with history, both sacred and profane."

An 1835 letter from Thomas Wier Jr. to his children recorded the names of his parents Thomas Wier and Elizabeth Faulkner Wier and his grandfather James Wier as well as James Wier's children, but no birthdates for any of them.
This letter is preserved in the Wier Collection at Starkville, Miss. It was cited in:
The Wier Family History (1866) by Col. William Withrow Wier
The Wier-Creekmore Genealogy (1944) by Sarah E. Creekmore Wallace (which reprinted the 1866 history)
Wier Family History by Jane Wier Latham (1900) published in the West Alabamian Newspaper (Carrollton, Alabama)
Going West With the Wiers (1992) by Jennie V. Wier

Wier-Creekmore and Jane Wier Latham show Thomas Wier was born 1708, the son of James Wier born 1683, probably just estimates.
TEN TRIBES OF WIER (1933, 1938 and 1940) by Rev. William Swansea Wier says the same and cites the family bible in his family's possession (possibly belonging to Swansea/Swanzy Wier) which showed these names and dates as well as the name of James Wier's wife being Margaret Agnes O'Marra and a sister of James Wier being Isabella Wier. The location of this Bible is now unknown. It may be that these additional names were written into the Bible much later.
TEN TRIBES OF WIER further adds that James Wier (born 1683)was a son of John Wier and Jane(t) Ferguson of Edinburgh who removed to Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Citing a letter dated 1842 from Thomas Wier Jr. "to a granddaughter," the letter adds one additional generation to the pedigree, stating that his great-grandfather John Wier married Janet Ferguson, daughter of Rob Ferguson of Edinburgh, and whose sister Nancy married Capt. Robert Faulkner, "to which ilk my mother, Elizabeth Faulkner of Londonderry, belonged."
Again, no dates are given in the letter, but one edition of TEN TRIBES states John Wier and Janet Ferguson married in 1653 while another implies they married not too long before emigrating to Ireland in 1664. Either date is quite early for a couple whose younger two children James and Isabella were not born until c1683. TEN TRIBES neither identifies the granddaughter to whom the letter was addressed (possibly a daughter of David Stuart Wier) nor quotes it entirely and its whereabouts is unknown today.

These generations are continued further back in TEN TRIBES and also appear in:
