Biography
Capt. William Downing is mentioned in the Northumberland County Records on January 20, I655, when John Edwards assigned his interest in a patent for land to the said Downing.
On January 27, I668, "William Downing of Great Wicocomoco river, planter," deeded property to his children as follows:
â¢To his eldest son, William, and to his son, John, 600 acres of land up the north side of horse-path and bounding east upon Wnm. Wildy and west upon Richard Nelms.
â¢Two cows to (name indecipherable),
â¢to his daughter, Mary Downing, one cow.
Witness, William Jones.
About this time Capt. Downing married Margaret (last name unknown) 7 Jun 1679,
The Court ordered that provisions for all Wicomico parish levied for the Potomac Fort be delivered at the house of Capt. William Downing, Sr. On the same day Capt. Downing was sworn a Justice of the Court. This office he held until the time of his death in I683.
Capt. Downing's will was dated February 9, I682, and was probated by Mrs. Margaret Downing, his executrix, in September or October, 1683, but was burned in 1710. His children were:
1fnu
2William
3John
4Thomas
5Mary
6a daughter,
and by second marriage, 7. Charles[1]
Capt. William Downing (1608 - 1683) of Norfolk County, Virginia is apparently a grandson ofGeorge Downing (1552 - 1610)of Beccles, Suffolk, England, but the exact lineage has not been determined.
The Rev. Emanuel Downing (1585 - 1658) is a strong candidate for William's father. Emanuel's second wife, Lucy (Winthrop) Downing, was the sister of Gov. John Winthrop, the head of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Emanuel Downing brought his large family to America in the 1630s.
Capt. William Downing Sr. (b. 1608) worked for many years as a seaman on board the British merchant vessels crossing the Atlantic from Bristol to Boston and back.
Keach provides a summary of Capt. Downing's descendants in Northumberland County, Virginia in the three articles found inThe William and Mary Quarterlycited below.
A basic summary of his family group may be found in Vol. 25 No. 1 at page 41:[2]
"Captain William Downing had five sons and two daughters:
â¢1) William, who left no male issue;
â¢2) John;
â¢3) Thomas, who left one son, Thomas, who died without issue;
â¢4) George, died unmarried;
â¢5) Charles, who died unmarried;
â¢6) Mary, probably married Jonathan Royston, and had an only child, Mary, who married Charles Betts;
â¢7) Patience, married first, ante 1695, Daniel Neale (issue: Nathan Neale); second John Graham (and as Mrs. Patience Graham brought suit in behalf of her son, Nathan Neale); third, William Coppedge (issue: John Coppedge, b. January 31, 1710) The information recorded here for Patience is also found in a paragraph about William's GRANDDAUGHTER Patience, daughter of Thomas on p. 192 in the first Keach articile.
Research Notes
It would appear that Mrs. Keach, in preparing her articles, kept learning new details, particularly about William's children . This explains why the two lists differ slightly. Note that the second one lists sons first, then daughters.
This writer is slightly confused about William's marriages, and therefore the mothers of the children. After mentioning the 1668 deeds given to sons William and John, and the cows given to two other children, the article states "About this time Capt. Downing married Margaret ________, 1679, June 7." Then a statement about delivering provisions to his house. Then a new paragraph that begins "On the same day Capt Downing was sworn a Justice of the Court." The temporal markers, "about this time" and "on the same day", lead to my confusion. Also note that a person named John Downing served as attorney to Mr. Samuel Typton (a surname shared by Margaret's second husband) on 19 Nov 1684. Assuming this is John, the second son of William, we can safely say that John and William were definitely adults by 1684, and not likely children of a 1679 marriage.
Add to that, I believe that the sons should have been of age to receive the deeds in 1668, predating, one supposes, the marriage to Margaret. This suggests that at least four children were born to William before he married Margaret. Then it states that Mrs. Margaret Downing was his executrix, and that his last child, Charles, was from a second marriage. This suggests to me that there was a first wife who bore the first six children, and that Margaret was only the mother to Charles, not the others.
All offered as food for thought and further research.
