Bio: Robert was the son of John & Anne Fuller and one of 7 children. He was born and died in Redenhall, Harleston, Norfolk, England.

On 29 July 1572, he married Sarah Frances Dunkhorne. They were the parents of 9 children-Thomas, Edward, Anne, John, Elizabeth, Dr. Samuel, Robert, John, and Edmund.

After Sarah's death, Robert married Frances Blackwell in 1585. They were the parents of 8 children-Sarah (Spaulding), Christopher, Rose, Elizabeth, Thomas, Susannah (Winslow), Valentine, and Mary (Lowe).

Two of his sons, Dr. Samuel and Edward and daughter Susannah, were aboard the famous "Mayflower' and immigrated to America.?Note: The original memorial above (1) merged the family of Robert "the butcher" Fuller and Robert "the tanner" Fuller together producing a chimera; (2) Robert was NOT the son of John Fuller and his wife Anne, as the latter were Robert's older brother and Robert's sister-in-law; (3) Robert was not buried on the date stated; (4) Robert and first wife Sarah did not marry on the date stated; (4) two of the claimed children of Robert and Sarah were NOT their children; (5) Robert did not marry a Frances Blackwell as no record exists when and where Robert married second wife Frances, thus there is no knowledge of what her maiden or perhaps previous married surname was; (6) Robert and Frances only had four, not 8, children; and (7) where the existing gravestone "inscription" comes from is unknown, but "Susannah" in that text was not the sister of Edward and Samuel Fuller of the Mayflower and their sister Anne was never named Susannah. Hence, there is no such "inscription" on Robert Fuller's gravestone, if one still exists, stating what the text claims.

Robert Fuller, called the butcher to distinguish him from Robert Fuller, the tanner, was born prior to 1558, the earliest surviving year of the Redenhall parish baptism records. He may have been the son of John Fuller of Redenhall, called the elder, in whose will dated Feb. 4, 1558-9, proved May 12, 1559, gave to son John Fuller all land and tenements "both bound and free in Redenhall and Wortwell, or elles wyer [elsewhere], he paying to my son Robert Fuller 10 pounds." However, there is no record that conclusively proves Robert "the butcher" Fuller was John "the elder" Fuller's son.

On Jan. 29, 1572/73 at the parish of Starston adjoining Redenhall, Robert "the butcher" Fuller m. 1) Sarah Dunkhorn (q.v.) The claim Sarah was the daughter of John Dunkhorn and born in Redenhall is unlikely as the surname Dunkhorn is not found in the Redenhall parish baptism records. In addition, that Sarah was alternately born in adjoining Starston also cannot be proved as the Starston parish records do not exist prior to the year 1558 (i.e., they begin 14 years prior to Robert and Sarah's marriage). Robert and Sarah had seven children baptized of record at Redenhall, then in the old English Julian calendar. The dates shown below are as represented in the modern Gregorian calendar:

• 2. Edward, bp. Sept. 4, 1575;
• 3. Ann, bp. Apr. 22, 1577;
• 4. John, bp. Mar. 15, 1578/79; buried Feb. 10, 1580/81;
• 5. Samuel, bp. Feb. 20, 1580/81 [not Jan. 20, 1580 as appears in all current literature];
• 6. John again, bp. Mar. 25, 1582; and
• 7. Edmond, bp. May 19, 1583; buried Aug. 19, 1584.

Robert's wife Sarah was buried at Redenhall on July 1, 1584.

On an unknown date and place, Robert "the butcher" Fuller m. 2) Frances, whose maiden name has never been discovered. Some claim it was Blackwell, but no record has ever been found remoting suggesting her maiden name. By second wife Frances was born four children baptized of record at Redenhall:

• 8. Sarah, bp. Sept. 4, 1586, who m. James Spalding of record Nov. 26, 1607 at the nearby parish of Denton;
• 9. Christopher, bp. Dec. 15, 1588; buried July 12, 1590;
• 10. Elizabeth, bp. Nov. 29, 1590; and
• 11. Mary, bp. July 13, 1595.

Robert "the butcher" Fuller wrote his lengthy will May 19, 1613 and was buried at Redenhall May 23, 1614. The will names his then living children as Thomas, Edward, Ann, Samuel, Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary. His son John had d. testate and was buried at Redenhall in 1608, leaving a son John who is called in Robert's will as his grandson. The will was twice presented, first by his widow Frances and then by son Thomas, the co-executor, on June 16, 1614 when the will was formally proved. The "widow Frances" was buried at Redenhall Mar. 28, 1632 leaving no record of a probated estate or estate administration.

Contrary to the 1901 published abstract of his will, the claim his will stated he be buried at the Redenhall churchyard does not exist in his will. However, it is likely he was buried there.

"First I commit & command my soul into the hands of God my most worshipful father & to Jesus Christ his only son my alone savior & redeemer & through them I hope to be saved & my body I commit to the earth to be buried in Christian burial in decent & Christian manner in hope of a joyful resurrection unto everlasting life."

Other important provisions of his will have been poorly represented or not at all. Specifically, in 1614 son Edward was in debt with his father Robert obligated to pay a share of Edward's debts. Robert made son Edward the residual legatee to the tenement bequeathed to Edward's step-mother Francis, to be received upon Francis' death. He also left Edward 20 pounds to be paid two whole years after Robert's death, and a 1/8th share in all household goods and chattels not otherwise bequeathed to Edward's step-mother and elder brother Thomas. However, if Edward or his heirs failed to discharge the debt his father was obligated for payment, then all such "gifts" to Edward in his father's will were void. Son Samuel was bequeathed the sum of 15 pounds to be paid three whole years after Robert's death. And daughter Ann was bequeathed 20 pounds to be paid four whole years after Robert's death. The claim that Robert left his grandson John 5 pounds has been misrepresented. When grandson John was of sufficient age to be apprenticed to learn a trade, Robert's eldest son Thomas was to choose the master and pay that master 5 pounds.

Robert and first wife Sarah's sons Edward and Samuel were passengers of the 1620 sailing of the Mayflower that settled the Plymouth Colony in present-day Massachusetts. Samuel was a resident of Leiden from 1609 to 1620 and a Deacon of Rev. John Robinson's church at Leiden. In 1985 Edward was claimed to have been a resident of Leiden in 1612; however, the Dutch document claiming such proof was read backwards and was concerned with "Eduwaert Fauwler" (i.e., Edward Fowler) who was a resident of The Hague, not of Leiden. The same Edward Fowler personally signed notary records in The Hague in 1613 and 1622, latter when Edward Fuller was already dead in Plymouth, Mass. Edward Fuller is believed to have joined brother Samuel in England for the sailing of the Mayflower.

Edward and Samuel's sister Ann married William White at Leiden in 1612 and appears in the Leiden betrothal records as late as 1619. However, Ann (Fuller) White was not one and the same as the wife of Mayflower passenger William White's wife named Susanna. That Ann was one and the same as Susanna has been thoroughly disproved, and Ann was not the mother of Mayflower children Resolved and Peregrine White or their half-siblings Josiah Winslow and Elizabeth (Winslow)(Brooks) Curwin.

Susannah is then listed below as a child (not a grandchild) of Robert Fuller along with Dr. Samuel and Edward and their siblings.
