Judge Caleb Valentine - Warren Co., NJByDorothy WrayJuly 03, 2004 at 06:45:23
I recently got a copy of the will of Judge Caleb Valentine of Warren County, New Jersey. The will is dated October 17, 1859.His gravestone says Judge Valentine died January 3, 1861.
The items in the will are:
1) to wife Lydia Valentine - $300 worth of household furniture and 20 shares of Morris & Essex Railroad stock, on the condition she releases her right of dower in the remainder of the estate
2) to grandsons Caleb V. Cummins and Caleb V. Smith - each $100
3) to grandson Caleb H. Valentine, Jr. - leveling and surveying instruments, library of books, field notes and map of surveys, gold watch for which he is to be charged $300; also to be charged with money expended on his education
4) John Bo_k_____ to be charged 3% interest on note held against him; the whole to be deducted out of his wife's share of estate
5) executors to sell real estate and divide proceeds of both real and personal estate among children and grandchildren of deceased parents, deducting aforementioned amount against grandson Caleb H. Valentine and the note against John Bo_k____ out of the share of his wife Rachel
Dr. William Rea and Jesse Smith appointed executors
Based on the index of Union Cemetery, Hackettstown, census reports, and the above will, the known children of Judge Caleb Valentine and his second wife Jane Caskey (April 13, 1783-February 16, 1841) are:
1) Mary Valentine - February 19, 1821-February 17, 1891 - married Dr. William Rea on June 16, 1842
2) Jane Valentine - 1822-1834
3) Elizabeth H. Valentine - December 27, 1825-March 27, 1897 - married G. W.Cummins
4) Margaret Valentine - June 26, 1824-March 12, 1885 - married Jesse Smith on December 27, 1843
As listed in the will above, there obviously was a son who was the father of grandson Caleb H. Valentine, Jr.(1838-1886).I have found no information about him and don't know whether his mother was Jane Caskey or first wife Anne Likings (1788-November 25, 1818).I believe this son must have died before the 1840 census as the only other Valentine listed in Warren County at that time was a young woman named Matilda Valentine with 3 young children and 1 older woman in the household.By the time of the 1850 census Matilda had remarried to Henry L. Wiggins and living in their household were Caleb Valentine, 13, and Emma E. Valentine, 10.Close by was Rachel Valentine, 14, living in the household of Dr. William and Mary Rea.
Hope this information will be helpful to someone.
