My Dear Kinsman:

For such I am sure you are. As I understand the migration of the Early families from Germany to America, their settlement here, is briefly something like this: Three Early brothers came from German to this country in the early day, the date I do not have and settled for the time about Germantown, PA. Later two of them migrated to Ohio, while the other one remained in PA. My great grandfather, John Early(John b. abt 1750 Germany or 1752 Pennsylavania?),was one of the two to locate in Ohio, and died there. He and his wife were buried at the Old Lutheran Church yard at West Alexandria, departing this life at about 76,both of them. I visited their graves some years ago. They were buried in a slightdepression in the cemetery. When the new Lutheran Church was built, this depression was filled up to a level of the rest of the grounds. A statement was given out to the effect that the depressionwould be leveled up and those having friends buried there should remove the bodies if so desired. The bodies of my two ancestors were not removed. So theyremain under a fill.

My grandfather, Jacob Early, was born in PA., near Lancaster, 1778. At the age of about 20 he came down into the Shenandoah Valley of VA., hired himself to grandfather Wanger to work on the farm. In the Wanger family there were three girls, and grandfather married Margaret later on. Twelve children were born to them, eightsons and four daughters, all growing to maturity and all lived to an old age except one of the daughters. My father, Noah Early,(b. 1823)was the youngest ofthis large family. My grandfather spent the last forty years of his life in blindness and died in 1869, at the age 91. I have the date of the births of the twelve children.

Three of my uncles, John,(b. 1803)Samuel(b. 1810)and Jacob,(b. 1816)moved to Ohio when they were young married men and located near Lima, where two of them died. Uncle John died at Johnsville, Ohio. Still some of their descendants of these uncles live in the Lima community and other parts of the state, while others have gone to other states. There are some of the descendants of my grandfather still in VA., but not a large number. I suspect that there are descendants of the original three brothers in almost every State and Territory of theUnion. Tracing them would be a protracted task.

The first Joseph Earlyyou speak of I know not. If you have the date of his location in Ohio correct, it could not be one of the two original brothrer who migrated from Germantown to Ohio in the early day. The second Joseph Early(b. 1820 d. 1865)you speak of was my uncle, the next older child in the family to father. Hewith his family moved to Ohio in the fall of 1864, he died, and was buried at Sugar Hill, near West Alexandria. I have visited this grave several times. He was a minister of the Church of the Brethren (Dunkers). After his death the family came back to their old home in VA. Some of them are still here. His oldest son, A.B. Early, is nearing his 90th birthday. Our Early family is remarkable for longevity. A healthy, rugged set they are.(Uncle Joe made a note on the back ofpg 1. "I am not sure this iscorrect that Joseph Early was burried at Sugar Hill. I think that it is a mistake. I was at Sugar Hill - did not see his grave. There is a Joseph Early buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in West Alexandria. This Joseph Early was a brother to John W. Early, my grandfather, your great grandfather. Aunt Hesterwho ought to know, told me this last Sunday. I think that H.C. Early is mistaken" No date is mentioned when Uncle Joespoke to his Aunt Hester).

There are two Early families in the United States. Ours is of German extraction, the other one of Scotch-Irish, of the General Early of the Southern Confederacy, a noted general in the southern army. This family is in the South, with probably a few of its members scatted elsewhere. The characteristics of the two families are distinctly different.

Elder J. Carson Miller, Moore Store, Shenandoah County, VA., is writing a history of the Miller-Early family. He is an able, scholarly gentlemen, a minister of the Church of the Brethren. He has gone to much trouble and expense to collect data, and I judge he would take the time to give you more elaborate information, if you write him. If you write him, tell him that I referred you to him. You will find him most courteous.

I am in my eighty-second year since May eleven, and am nearly blind. I see scarcely enough to operate the typewriter. Hence the typographical errors. In spite of all I can do, I will strike the wrong key now and then. I have been in the ministry for fifty five years, and have been active all these years, and still peach occasionally. I have my second wife. She and I live alone in Dayton, a beautiful, little city of nearly a thousand. We are happy together.

I would be glad for one of the histories of the Early family of which you speak. I did not know in fact that such a history is extant. Some years ago J.L. Early, a Lutheran pastor of Harrisburg, PA., undertook to write a history of our family,but died before he finished it. A part of the manuscript for the book must be in the hands of some of his family. It might be procured.

Rev H.C. Early 'Henry' typed a two page letter to Uncle JoeEarly.The above letteris keyed word for word from his original letter,very few typed errors (no white-out in those days). He certainly was an educated man, great spelling, or maybe he used his dictionarylike Ido.

Paragraph1, he refers to three brothers coming from Germany.Is he referring to Jacob or Hans JacobEhrle/Oehrle & possibly 2 other brothers? I think he's referring to John Earlyborn 1750in Germany or 1752 in Pennsylvania, however he only had one other brother Jacob, & 3 sisters, Lutrey or Lucia,Agnes & Eve or Eva according to their father,Jacob's will dated Apr 1777.

Mr. Noah Early, an old and well known citizen of the Laurel Hill section, died Saturday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jas. W. Gentry where he had been making his home for some months. He was in his 87th year, and was born near Harrisonburg. He was three times married. His first wife, who was Miss Elizabeth Evers, of the Cave Station neighborhood, died thirteen months after their marriage,leaving no children. His second wife was Miss Elizabeth Hollar, daughter of the late David Hollar who lived near the Pike Church. Of her three children one died in infancy; another David Hollar, died when 33 years old and the third, Mrs. Rebecca Shreckhise,now resides near Mt. Sidney. His third wife, who was Miss Sarah Kidd, died about 16 years ago. Of her nine children, one, Dr. John W. Early, died at Mt. Clinton and the rest are now living as Follows: Rev. H. C. Early, Penn-Laird; J. S. Early, Ft. Defiance; Mrs. J. W. Ritchie, Grottes; Mrs. James Gentry, Laurel Hill; B.F. Early, Barthound, Colorado; Mrs. Isaac Spitzer, Grottoes; Mrs. Alice Spitzer, Laurel Hill; and Mrs. J. S. H. Good, Dayton. The funeral took place Tuesday morning from the Church of the Brethren at Weyer's Cave.
