(1) James BRADSHAW
James BRADSHAW, b cl7l5 in Ireland, d 13.3.1776 in Buckingham Twp, Bucks Co, Pennsylvania. Married 1739 to Ruth Lowther, b cl720, d 10.2.1800 d/o William and Martha Lowther of Moate, County Westmeath, Ireland and later of Buckingham Twp, Bucks Co, Pa. Ruth Lowther travelled to America with her parents and brothers and sisters. The Lowthers brought their Quaker Certificate from Ireland to Abington, Pennsylvania, Monthly Meeting, in 1727. Ruth and her brother Robert Lowther were said to be Presbyterian, and the rest of the family were Quakers. James Bradshaw came out from Ireland in 1727 on the same ship as his wife to be. He was of English descent. He was a weaver by trade as stated in his will and a farmer with his own weaving sheds and bleaching greens for linens on his farm.
James Bradshaw's religion is not known. After a careful examination of the early Quaker records of Pa, it has been determined that James and Ruth were not Quakers at the time of their marriage or when their 13 children were born, as there is no Quaker records of this. The Presbyterian Historical Society of Philadelphia states that many of the Presbyterian, records for the years 1727-1788 are missing. This could account for the fact that there is no religious record of James and Ruth's marriage and no religious list of the births of their children.
Almost all of their children became Quakers and made Quaker marriages. Ruth (Lowther) Bradshaw joined the Society of Friends, (Quakers) at Buckingham Twp, Monthly Meeting 6.6.1769.---courtesy of Jean Reid.

A Brief History of the BRADSHAW Farm
This farm was part of 500 acres purchased by William Cooper in 1700. In 1729 William Lowther purchased, from him, 150 acres of good land, mostly covered by forest. The farm is situated on the Durham Road, at the South West corner of Mechanicsville Road and about four miles North West of Doylestown, Pa, in Buckingham Twp Bucks Co. In 1741 James Bradshaw purchased 70 acres from his father-in-law, William Lowther. In 1750, when William Lowther died. James Bradshaw purchased the remaining 80 acres. The purchase price going to
the settlement of the estate to the Lowther heirs. In 1741 the house was enlarged. It is built of field stone, plastered over, is three stories high and has eleven rooms. The barns are also built of stone and a stone wall eight feet high was built from the house and around the outbuildings for protection from wild animals. The wall was later reduced to a height of four feet and part of it remained until 1981 when the house was restored and the largest barn had to be taken down.
The Bradshaw family lived here in succession for over 150 years. The house and remaining buildings are in a good state of preservation, and the farm is used presently as a nursery stock farm, by a private family, in 1983.---courtesy of Jean Reid
...Harriet Meredith, great granddaughter of James of Buckingham stated to her niece Annie (Meredith) Fretz, that James had come out to America from Ireland on the same ship as his wife to be---Ruth Lowther. Ruth's parents, William and Martha Lowther and their six children, Sarah, Joel, Ruth, Robert, Martha and Mary, brought their Quaker removal certificate from Ireland, to Abington Meeting of Quakers, Montgomery County, PA. It is said, they arrived in 1727, but the certificate was not presented until 1729...
...In the 1871 census, Ontario, Canada, eight of the widely scattered descendants of James of Buckingham Twp, Bucks Co, PA, stated that the family origin was Ireland. All of the other descendants said the origin was England, which was correct; however, the Irish designation showed that the family had lived for some time in Ireland...----end of excerpt
