Notities over Richard Ridgeway

 

Richard and Elizabeth Chamberlain Ridgway arrived in 1679 on the Jacob and Mary and settled at the Delaware River Falls on the Pennsylvania shore, adjoining William Penn's estate. Richard was granted a license to keep an ordinary, called Crown Inn. He is also said to have been a tailor.

In 1690 they moved to 600 acres near Stoney Brook, Maidenhead Twp, West Jersey, (today on the road between Princeton and Lawrenceville in Mercer County.) In 1695 they moved to 600 acres on Mattacopany Creek, Springfield Twp, Burlington Co. (In 1979 near Village of Jacksonville on the road from Burlington to Jobstown.)

Richard gave one acre to the Quakers for a meeting house and burying ground, "Copany" or "Old Springfield" Meeting of the Burlington MM. In 1987 the building erected in 1775 was still standing, having been converted to a private home.

The Ridgway-Ridgeway Family

"Richard Ridgway and Elizabeth, his wife, of Welford, in the County of Bark (Berks) Taylor (tailor) arrived in the Delaware river on the ship 'Jacob and Mary' of London in the 7th month 1679 with their children: Thomas born the 25th 5th month, 1677 and Richard born the 27th, 2nd mo 1680." quoted from the "Book of Arrivals" page 18 in the Bucks County (Pennsylvania) Historical Society at Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

The name Ridgway/ Ridgeway comes from the Roman highway "The Ridgeway" that runs through Berkshire, near Welford, a hamlet in the White Horse Vale, about five miles east of Lambourne and about the same distance north west of Speenhamland (Newbury).
