Nickerson-John Church Hamilton (Born August 22, 1792 - died July 25, 1882) was the fourth son, fifth child of the founding father Alexander Hamilton. He was a lawyer, fought in the War of 1812, and devoted decades to writing a many-volumed life of his father and sorting through his labyrinthine papers.John Church Hamilton graduated from Columbia College in 1809. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U S Army in March 1814, and served as an aide-de-camp to General Harrison, but resigned on June 11, 1814. An interesting sidenote here is that recently, an original stampless cover letter, written by John Church Hamilton, was auctioned on Ebay, and the letter sold for $200. The letter was written from Newport and was dated June 26, 1812, and the letter was sent to General Stephen Van Rennselaer in Albany NY, who was a Major General in the New York State Militia during the War of 1812, and he commanded troops along the northern frontier. Hamilton was asking Rennselaer to consider him as his aide-de-camp which did not happen. Stephen Van Rensselaer was badly defeated by the British at the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 12, 1812, and he resigned his post shortly thereafter. Stephen Van Rensselaer III (1764-1839), called "the Patroon" married his cousin, Margareta Schuyler, a daughter of Philip Schuyler (1733-1804), who was also the grandfather of John Church Hamilton, whose grandmother was Catherine Van Rensselaer (1734-1803) -- thus John Church Hamilton was kin to Major General Stephen Van Rensselaer. Hamilton's mother, Elizabeth Schuyler (sister of Margareta Schuyler Van Rensselaer), was another daughter of Philip Schuyler and Catherine Van Rensselaer. Elizabeth Schuyler married Alexander Hamilton. John Church Hamilton, the son of Alexander Hamilton, originally a Whig, joined the Republican Party and one time ran for Congress. While also a noted jurist, John Church Hamilton is best known as an historian and biographer of Alexander Hamilton, his father. John Church Hamilton published among others "Memoirs of Alexander Hamilton" in 1834-40 and "Works of Alexander Hamilton" in 1851 in two volumes, and in 1855-58 he published a "History of the Republic, as traced in the Writings of Alexander Hamilton" in seven volumes. John Church Hamilton, widower (retired), is found in the 1880 Census of New York - Manhattan - living at # 17 Twentieth Street with his matronly sisters: Charlotte, Annie, Adelaide and Alice Hamilton and with four servants.
