Begun in 1935 by the Social Security Act signed into law by FDR, more than thirty million Americans were registered for the economic security sanctions by 1937. From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living.

Albiston Gary Kelsey Albiston, 61, lifelong area resident, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Superior, WI on Saturday, May 14, 2011. He was born on October 7, 1949 to Melvyn and Alyce (Rossiter) Albiston. Gary attended Denfeld High School and went on to serve in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a retired Iron Worker, with Local 563. Gary was an avid ice fisherman and golfer. On February 19, 1992 he married Cynthia Demery in Las Vegas, NV. Gary is preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott Daniel and grandson, Timothy Kelsey Freid. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Cynthia; daughter, Sheila (Ryan) Peters of Barron, WI; son, Sean (Annie) Albiston of Stillwater, MN; daughter, Kevra (Tom) Unger and son, Joseph Johnson all of Brainerd; brothers, Melvyn (Elaine) Albiston of Parkland, FL and Robert Albiston of Duluth, MN; and eight grandchildren. A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial Service Thursday, May 19th, 2011 in Bell Brothers Chapel.
