Daniel lived on 125 acres of a 250 acre tract. Apparently only 2 persons knew his first name was James - his wife, and James Burns. June 27 1775 Daniel Oakes commission and attestation, Col. Thompson's Regiment of Rangers, First Council of Safety of the Revolutionary Party. He is listed as 30 years old, born in PA, 5' 1" tall. (This is found in South Carolina records-Chester Co., courthouse) - per Lillie Rackley. 1785 Daniel Oakes was in Chester Co., SC as early as 20 Apr 1785, when he was appointed by the first court, after the county was formed (24 Mar 1785), as one of the Surveyors of the Roads. 1786 Appointed as Petit Juror to serve at Oct court in the July 1786 Court. 1788 George Morris against Daniel Oakes 9 Oct 1788 1790 March 20 - Abel Johnson purchased plat for 138 acres on the Branch of Rockey Creek, Camden District, adjoining Daniel Oaks. Surveyed by William Boyd on 8 Aug 1787. From "Individual & Combined Document Indexes", Index to State plats (Cola & Chas) 1784-1864. SC Department of Archives and History Alphabetical Index, Roll 8, Dallas Library 12-14-92 1790 Census - Daniel Oakes - Camden District, Chester Co., SC 2 males 16 or over: Daniel Oakes & John McQue (McHugh), son-in-law 3 males under 16: John D. & Daniel (his sons) & Samuel (son of John & Elizabeth 5 females: Jennet, the wife, and daughters: Janet, Mary, Elizabeth and Serew NOTE: Using the above as a guideline and assumint that Elizabeth & her family (mentioned in Will) are living with Daniel, the "Serew" (mentioned in will) would be a daughter. 1797 July 24 Will proved in Court. Widow, Hannet (sic) Oaks (sic), and James Burns (sic) took oaths in court as executors of Daniel Oakes will - 27 July 1797. Sale recorded in court of Daniel Oakes estate 18 Sep 1797. 1798 Jan 27 Daniel Oakes, minor son of Daniel Oakes, dec'd, voluntarily chose Alexander Walker & Samuel Walker as his guardians. This would indicate Jennet, his mother, is now deceased. 1799 July 25 Debt judgement to James Daniel Oakes estate confessed by Samuel McCluney lists James Barnes (sic) as the surviving executor. Proves Jennet is dead by this time. Information above provided by: Lillie Rackley, PO Box 7, Commerce, TX 75429 ********* The Oakes family came from Ireland and settled in NC. They went from there to VA and from Virginia to Beechville, KY. One of the Oakes family went to Campbell, KY. Information above provided by: Rollin Oakes, Rt 2 Box 4, Sulphur Well, KY 42129 in a letter to Lillie Rackley postmarked 30 Jun 1987. ********* 1777 Jan 15 to Nov 22 - SC Historical & Genealogical Magazine - 2nd SC Continental Regiment of Foot. James Oakes appears on the list of noncommissioned officers and private men. List compiled from orderly book of Capt. Samuel DuBose, of the 2nd Regiment. Was on garrison or post duty in and about Charleston and Dorchester. Book can be found in Dallas, Tx library. 1778 March 8 - List of noncommissioned officers and soldiers in Captain Blake's Company - James Oakes was discharged. Same book as above. ********* From Family History Book in Oklahoma City Historical Library Call # C.S. 71041041 Neath the OAKS by Lonnie OKES dated 1952-1956. Majority of book is Virginia and Massachusets Daniel and Jesse Oakes lived in Chester Co., PA, in colonial days, according to records in the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission office at Harrisburg, PA. The county seat of Chester is West Chester, south of Philadelphia. Daniel was a private in Capt. Lowden's company of volunteers in Col. William Thompson's Battalion of riflemen from June, 1775 to July 1, 1776. This outfit was formed in Northumberland (sic) County, PA, a county formed in 1772 and the county seat of which was then and is now Sunbury. Pennsylvania Archives list Jesse Oakes, private, in "New Levies: Depreciation Pay." Other Revolutionary soldiers from Pennsylvania were Samuel Oacks, Seth Oak, Flower Oakes or Oaks, and Phillip Oaks.
