Received land grants for his service in the American Revolution. 100 acres on Rocky Creek & 200 acres on Fishing Creek, in Chester SC. On March 1, 1784 he sold his inheritance, and all rights to his brother Leard Jr. for 6 pounds sterling. In April 1785 James was appointed by the court to survey and over see the building of Charleston Road from York Co., through Chester Co., SC.
In 1788, he sold his land to Robert Boyd (brother-in-law). In 1788 he was
appointed appraiser of the John Walker estate. In 1797 he became executor of the Daniel Oakes (brother-in-law) estate. In 1806 James was on the tax roll in Christian Co., KY where he received 800 acres on Casey Creek.
