Notities over Nicholas Hoyt

A genealogical history of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight families
By David Webster Hoyt
Pg 312-316

Children of (2603) Nicholas* and Susanna Hoyt.
(2616) I. Samuel,3 b. May 1 * 1647, at Windsor; m. Sarah ------(2666). Savage says that he d. young and unmar.; but upon what authority we have been unable to learn> Samuel was certainly living in 1668, as will appear from the following extract from the Windsor records :
"Nov. 16, 1668, Samuel sou of Nicholas Hoyt, being of age, to Receive his Portion out of the Estate that was his fathers," his third is set off to him. He had the dwelling house, with all the home Jot and part of the meadow, the particulars of which are omitted here. On the left hand margin against this entry, and apparently independent of it, is the following: "All this, both house & meado Samuel Hoyt hath sold to Samuel Gibbs." There is no date for this, and, so far as appears here, the sale may have beeu subsequent to the record of 1668.
On the records of East Chester, Westchester Co., N. Y., we find the following entries: March 5, 1672, "Allsq This day Samell Hoit Seniorf & Jo???? Tomkins are admited Inhabitants iu Eastchester." March 5,1672-3, "Samell Hoite Sen. granted 5 acres for a home lot to build a house on the said lot." Feb., 1675, Saml Hoite chosen fence-viewer. 1679, Samuel Hoitte rec'd lot of meadow, No. 11. 1682-3, Saml. Hoite Sen. was named with (2605) Moses Hoitte in boundaries of two parcels of land theu entered. Oct., 1682, Samell Hoit rec'd lot No. 4 of land divided. Parcels of land in Hutchinson's field in E. Chester were. May 5, 1686, entered on the E. Chester records, as those of " Samell Hoitte, formerly of East Chester." The land of Moses Hoitte is named in the boundary. Three parcels, apparently the same, were also entered at White Plains, as bought by Samuel Hoyt, formerly of E. Chester, and entered by order of the recorder, May 5, 1686; a copy taken Nov. 9, 17.00. There was a Samuel Hoit Jr.-)- in E. Chester iu 1692-3, but no Sam. Hoit on the list of rates in that town in 1699-1700.
The earliest mention of Samuel Hoyt or Haight of Flushing, Queens Co., Long Island, N. Y., is found on the records of the Society of Friends, as a witness of the mar. of John Prior of Killingworth and Elizabeth Bowne of Flushing, 2d 9* mo., 1678, where his name is Sam Hoyte. It does not appear whether he then resided in Flushing. As a witness of other mar. are Sam Houit, 27'" 9"' mo., 1678; Sam Haitt, 2d 12th mo., f Sam. Jr., in 1672, may have been (2620) Samuel,s as his father did not remove from E. Chester till 1676. Sam. Jr., in 1692-3, may have been (2666) Samuel^ See also (262s).
1679; Sam1. Haight 25"' 1" mo., 1686; also Sam. Haight in 1692, '93, 1700, '2, '4, and '11. There were two Sarah Haights, as well as two Samuels, parents and children, among the witnesses of the mar. of Nicholas,4 son of Sam.3 and Sarah. The name of Wm. Noble occurs as one of the proprietors of Flushing in 1666, etc., but no Hoyt nor Haight. The name of Samuel Hoyt immediately follows that of Wm. Noble, and is the last one of the nine names of the proprietors of Flushing, found on the Indian deed of April 14, 1684, and the patent of March 23, 1685, on file at Albany. The Documentary History of N. Y. gives Samuel Hoyt of Flushing in 1683.
* In another place on the W. records this is March 1, and at Hartford it is May 7. The age given on the probate records at his father's death corresponds most nearly with May 1.

From Bolton's Hist. Westchester Co., N. Y., we learn that Jan. 24, 1695-6, the Indian Sachem Paihungo deeded to John Harrison, of Flushing, Queen's Co., Nassau Island [Long Island], N. Y., a certain tract of land in Westchester Co., of which deed (2667) "Nicolas Haight" was a witness. June 25, 1696, William III. confirmed this purchase by granting a patent, found at Albauy, covering the same land, to William Nichols, Ebenezer Wilson, David Jameson, John Harrison, and Samuel Haight. Thus Sam. Haight became one of the five proprietors of" Harrisou's Purchase," which was, before 1 775, considered one of the precincts of Rye, and afterwards became the town of Harrison.
At Albany is also found a petition-of Samuel Haight, June 17, 1697, stating that his father-in-law, Wm. Noble, lately dec'd, and having "no children of his own body," left his estate to his widow during her life, and at her death to " the people called Quakers,"* the land then being in the possession of the widow and the petitioner. In consideration of the request of the dec'd, the petitioner had erected a meeting-house for the Quakers in that town, at his own charge, and prays that certain tracts of land may be confirmed to him at the decease of the widow. Also, same date, a patent to Samuel Hoight, of Flushing, granting and confirming land in F., lately belonging to his father-in-law,-)- Wm. Noble, of F., dec'd, in which Ann Noble, wid. of Wm., is mentioned.

Note- It seems quite certain that the Samuels of Windsor, East Chester, and Flushing are one and the same, and we have arranged them in accordance with that hypothesis. Their age coincides, for Sam. of Flushing had a grandson b. in 1092, and was therefore probably born himself a little before 1650, while Sam. of Windsor was b. in 1647. The dates also correspond remarkably well. Sam. disappeared from Windsor in 166s, or a few years later; appeared in E. Chester in 1672, and removed from that place after Oct., 16s2, but before May, 16s6; and appeared in Flushing in 16s3 or 16s4. When he was a witness of marriages in 167s and '79, he might have resided in E. Chester. There seems to have been, at least in later years, constant intercourse between Flushing and Westchester County; for two sons of Sam. of Flushing settled there, and yet were present at the marriages of their sisters in Flushing. There is also a remarkable coincidence of names. The eldest son of Sam. of Flushing bore his own name. His other sons and eldest dau. were Nicholas, Jonathan, David, John, and Susanna, just the names of the father, two brothers, uncle, and mother of Sam. of Windsor. The name Nicholas furnishes strong circumstantial evidence, as that was so uncommon in the family. Again," Samucll Hoytc " was witness to a deed executed in Flushing, Dec. 20, 16ss, by which Wm. Parent of Flushing sold land in Guilford, Ct., to (2617) Jonathans Hoyt of Guilford, whom we suppose to have been brother of Samuel. There is no evidence against the hypothesis that, these three Samuels are identical, except the statement of Savage, and that is apparently disproved by the Windsor records.
* O'Callaghan (Hist. New Netherlands) states that Wm. Noble was a magistrate in Flushing in. 165s, and was then arrested for refusing to persecute Quakers. The first Quakers landed in thiscountry in 1656, at Boston. ,
t It is uncertain just what relation between Wm. Noble and Samuel Haight is indicated by the expression " father-in-law." The children of Sam.,* from Nicholas down, are spoken of as the children

The following petition is also found at Albany :
"To the Honorable John Nanfan Esqr Govern' & Commander in cheif of the Province of Newyork &c. "The humble petition of Samuel Horght John Wey & Rob' Field on behalfe of themselves and the rest of the {freeholders of Queens County of the persuasion & profession of the people called quakers

r
Also signed by "John way" and " Robert ffield."
From these petitions it would seem that 8am. Haight was the leading man among the Quakers of Flushing and Queens County.
At Jamaica, Queens Co., L. I., we find recorded deeds to Sam. Hoyt and Sam. Haight, of Flushing, land in F., 1696; also deeds from Sam. Haight, of F., land in F., 1705 and 1710. At White Plains, Westch. Co., are deeds of Sam. Haight Sen., of Flushing, Queens Co., Nassau Island, by which he sells land in Rye, in 1706, '11, etc.; and buys land in Westchester Co., known as No. 3, in 1705. Also, Ebenezer Wilson Esq., David Jameson, Samuel Hoyt [or Haight], Wm. Fowler, and Wm. Lawrence lease land "holden in common" in Harrison's purchase, part called Brown's Poiut, to Joseph Purdy, of Rye, Nov. 24, 1708. In 1706-9 Samuel Hoit, of Flushing, sold land on Bndd's Neck, Rye.
Sam. Haight, of Flushing, died in Sept., 1712, according to the Friends' records. Will dated 21rt 7' mo., 1712, proved Oct. 21, 1712, rec. atN. Y. City, commencing, " I Samuel Haight of Flushing in Queens County ou Nassau Island yeoman being Sick and Weake of body but my understand
of "Samuel and Sarah Haight," and his wid., Sarah Haight, was living aa late as 1740, though she must then have been about 90 years old, if she was the mother of Samuel.* She could not have been the dau. of Wm. Noble, as he had " no children of his own body." Perhaps she may have been a dau. of Wm. Noble's wife, by a former husband; or either Sam. or his wife may have been an adopted*child of Wm, Noble. There is no evidence that Sam. had more than one wife, though if Wm. Noble were the father of a deceased wife of Sam., the conditions given above would be met.
ing Sound and good and well knowing that it is appointed For all men to dye am Willing to Sett my house in order," etc. To his wife Sarah he bequeaths his movable estate, and also his homestead in Flushing, till his son John should marry'or be of age; after that she is to have one half of it during her life. He then gives land to his sons and his grandson, James Haight (whose father Sam.4 died just before the will was written), as given in connection with their history. He then orders a negro man, Luke, to be sold, the money to be equally divided between his daus. Hannah and Phebe, and gives away three negro boys, Titus to dau. Sarah Titus, with whom he lives, Mingo to Hannah, and Bristo to Phebe. He authorizes his executors (wife Sarah Haight, and friends Robert Field and Wm. Willis) to sell 200 acres of land, "part of my Lott of Land in number Six of Harrisons purchase," Rye, Westchester Co., to discharge a debt, and divides the remainder of said lot equally among his five daus., Susanna GrifFen, Sarah Titus, Mary Huystead, Hannah Haight, and Phebe Haight, who are also to have his movable estate after his wife's death. He then adds, "my will is that the four hundred acres of Land that I have conditioned with John Harrison of East Jersey for in Lien or Exchange for my houses and Land in Amboy Shall be Equally Divided between my four Sons (viz :) to Nicholas Haight, Jonathan Haight, David Haight and John Haight .... and If Said Exchange or conditions for Exchange should not,be effected, then my houses and Land at Amboy Shall be Kqually Divided amongst my four Sons above named."

(2617) II. Jonathan,3 b. June 7, 1649, at Windsor, Ct.; m. 1st, Sarah Pond,* March 6,1671-2 (2676), and 2d, Mary Bell [dau. of Francis Bell, of Stamford] (2677). His wife Sarah d. Oct. 16, 1676. He d. March 21, 1696-7, his wife Mary surviving him.
He removed to Guilford, Ct., as early as 1672 ;f for Jonathan Hoite is on the list of estates in G., Dec. 10, 1672; and the birth of a son of Jonathan Hoyt is recorded there Jan., 1672. On the G. land records we find deeds to Jona. Hoyte of G. in 1682 and '88,1 also a deed from Jona. Hoite in 1682. Jona. Hoyte is on the list of G. freemen, March, 1689-90. We also find the account of Jonathan Hoyte Sen. in the "fourth division of lands," Jan., 16945. The list of estates in 1690 seems to be the basis of this division, " with the addition of heads both male and female unto the list, to fix every person's right to the fourth division." He seems to have reed. 70 acres from the list of 1690; 40 for his wife, Sam. Hoyte, Mercy, and Hannah; 10 for his son Jonathan; and 10 for Merriam Carter. On the opposite page to this is another account of Jonathan Hoyte Sen., showing what disposition was made of this land.
An inventory est. Jonathan Hoyt, of G., is found at New Haven, containing the names and ages of his children; also an agreement between widow Mary Hoyt and the children, June, 1697. At G. is a deed to heirs of Jonathan Hoyte deed., late of G., dated 1697-8. Merriam Carter seems to have been a member of his family, but not a daughterperhaps a daughter of his wife. Wid. Mary Hoyt was living in 1704.
? Daughter of Samuel Pond. [Savage.]
t The date 1650, given on p. 14, on the authority of Hinman, ia probably an error.
J This deed ma executed in Fluahing, L. I., and witneased by Samuel Hoyte. [See Note, p. 313.]

(2618) * III. David3 (dea. and Lieut.), b. April 22, 1651, at Windsor,Ct.; m. 1st, Sarah Wells [dau. of Thomas], April 3, 1673 (2680), 2d, Mary Wilsou (2682), and 3d, Abigail Pomeroy [wid. of Joshua Pomeroy and dau. of Nathaniel Cook of Windsor] (2685). His 1st wife, Sarah, d. in 1676, before Sept. David Hoite took the "Oath of Alleagence," at Hadley, Mass., Feb. 8, 1678-9: but settled in Deerfield, Mass , as early as 1682. Boltwood, iu his Hadley Families, states that he moved from Hatfield to Deerfield.
When the French and Indians attacked Deerfield, Feb. 29, 1703-4, he was taken captive, with his wife and four children. On the way towards Canada, provisions became so scarce that Dea. Hoyt " perished of hunger near the lower Cohos," in the vicinity of what is now Newbury, Vt., May or June, 1704. Some of his descendants say that he was compelled to carry a large bundle, and that he must also carry his youngest child, or see her killed by the Indians; but he fainted under the double burden. His widow endured all the horrors of captivity, and returned to Deerfield. She afterwards m. Dea. Nathaniel Rice, and removed to Wallingford, Ct.
At Northampton we find invent, est. Lt. David Hoit of D., " who died some time in June, 1704," dated Feb. 4, 1706-7; and the estate was then divided among the widow, children, arid a grandchild.

(2619) IV. Daniel,3 b. April 10, 1653, at W.; d. July 15, 1655.
