Lexington, Kentucky
Bruce Douglas Bissmeyer, 63, husband of Jackie Runk Bissmeyer, passed away peacefully on May 7th, surrounded by his wife and children, due to complications from a brief battle with lung cancer. He was the son of Patricia Katz Bissmeyer and the late O.E. Bissmeyer, and the brother of Caron (Steve) Gastineau and the late Brete Bissmeyer. Born in Louisville, KY, he was a retired educator who dedicated his life to helping others, including the many students and teachers he worked with on his journey. He was a proud TKE fraternity brother, a music aficionado and a passionate sports fan who loved to cheer on his Reds, Bengals, and of course, the 'Cats. He was a cherished father to Melynda Bissmeyer and Jonathan (Hannah) Bissmeyer and grandfather ("Pappy") to Benjamin Gregory and Isaac Daniel Bissmeyer. He is survived by loving nieces and nephews, in-laws and life-long friends.
Message from Melynda Bissmeyer.
Today the world lost an amazing father, grandfather, son, family member, husband and friend. Bruce Bissmeyer passed away peacefully this morning from a brief illness related to complications of lung cancer. Its so hard to encapsulate everything that our dad was because, in the end, even a wordsmith like Dad wouldnt have the language to describe how many lives he touched.
He was an educator who always believed that any child any human was full of potential and wonder. His optimism was boundless, even in the darkest times. He always had time for anyone in need whether they were an old pal or someone he met in line at the drugstore.
He was a history buff. Anything and everything he absorbed knowledge like a sponge. He was a sports aficionado the culture, the stats, the revelry. He knew so much about so many things but he was never arrogant or condescending about being the smartest guy in the room. And man did he love pulling the lever on those video poker machines the thrill of gambling. Not for the money but for the pure instinctual rush of the chase. Because the chase was hope. And Dad was all about hope. He lived in the moment but always had an eye on the future -- he knew that there was joy to be had, memories to be made.
We were a wacky family we measured our heads, we traded inappropriate bodily function jokes, we talked openly about sex and love and demons and struggle. There was never a topic off-limits if we needed or wanted to chat about anything, the conversation was welcomed. He was a deep believer in dreams in following them and not letting any naysayers throw you off course.
He was taken too soon. But he had so much love surrounding him when he went. His family not just his bloodlines, but his wonderful ragtag gang of pals he laughed with and conspired with and raised hell with for over 50 years (and the equally hilarious, brilliant, strong wives beside them). The teachers and staff that motivated and supported him during his career in the Morehead, Lexington and Versailles school systems. The neighbors, the workers at his favorite gas stations and barbershop, the random friends he picked up along the journey because he always picked up friends anywhere he went.
There was not a song created between 1950 and 1990 that he couldnt recite the lyrics too and actually sing pretty well. And so we bid farewell to him with all the fervor in our souls and with a little Bob Dylan on our breath The only thing we knew how to do was just keep on keepin on. And so we will. With the memories we make, with the goals we accomplish, with the love we share we will keep on. And Dad will be watching. And guiding. And probably cracking a few off-color puns. Always remembered, always cherished, always alive inside our hearts.
