Buried in Pond Mills Cemetery London Ontario.ELLIOT GRIEVE (1784-1874), and his wife, JENNET ELLIOTT (1771-1825), with their seven children left Roxboroughshire, Scotland, to come to America. They moved to Upper Canada in 1819 after spending a year with Elliot`s sister, Jane, Mrs. James Beattie, in New York State. The family took up Crown Land in Westminster Township being the east half of Lot 21 in the First Concession, a long 100 acres stretching from the Second Concession road to the Baseline Road. Because the lines were not clearly surveyed Elliot settled on the wrong Lot, cleared the land and built his log buildings on the southwest corner of Lot 21, Concession 1. In 1826, when the mistake concerning the ownership of the property was discovered, Elliot exchanged with Joshua O`Dell, and got the deed for the Lot on which he was living. One hundred pounds was paid in settlement. This property would remain in the Grieve family for six generations. Some of the land in the community, which was known locally as the `Scotch Settlement` had been designated as a burial ground, and on May 12 1825, Jennet Elliott Grieve was the first to be interred there. This burial ground is now known as Pond Mills Cemetery. Elliot married Mrs. Jane (Baty) Herdman (1784-1865), a young widow with two children. Two more children were born of this marriage. Elliot`s eldest son, John, (1806-1838) had married Jean Murray and they farmed across the concession road from his family. John was imprisoned during the Rebellion of 1837 throughout one winter in the worst possible conditions. He was released in the spring of 1838, but his health was broken and he died shortlv afterward, leaving two small children and his young widow, who later married William Durguid. Elliot`s second wife, Jane, died at age 81 years and is buried at Pond Mills. All the Grieve family were staunch Presbyterians, and Elliot, together with other early settlers organized the first Presbyterian Church, and he served there as an Elder. In June, 1869, under his chairmanship, the Pond Mills Cemetery Board decided to procure stone pickets which would be numbered. Also, a notice would be put in the (London) Advertiser` that the levy of $ 1.00 per plot-holder must be paid by August I st to the Treasurer, and further, no metal or wooden railings would be permitted around the plots. Elliot Grieve died at age 90 years, and is buried at Pond Mills. Grave marker says 1781 - 1871
