He was one of the Captains in the expedition which discovered and conquered New Mexico. While in New Mexico, Alonso de Sosa Albornoz asked for and received permission from Juan de Oñate to return to Nueva Viscaya because he could not provide for the needs of his family, who had accompanied him to New Mexico. Before he could return, however, he was stabbed to death by Vicente de Zaldivar and several other men. This apparently was to keep other settlers from deciding to abandon the colony in New Mexico.
