18 October 1630: applied for freemanship [MBCR 1:80]. [Not my ancestor - see below]

26 May 1631: John Reading of the Inner Temple, London, to John Winthrop, writing about the will of Isaac Johnson: "You write you have sent it over, John Drake sayth he copied it to that purpose, but none can be heard of" [WP 3:37]. [Not my ancestor - see below]

13 March 1633/4: Bequest in will of Francis Drake of Esher, Surrey, to "John Drake, my Cozen William Drake's sonne, twenty poundes to be sent unto him into New England" [Waters 580-81]. [Not my ancestor - see below]

COMMENTS: The John Drake of the third item above, and almost certainly of the other two, was son of William Drake of Wiscombe Park, Devonshire, a junior line of the prominent Drakes of Ashe of the same county. The letter of John Reading shows that a John Drake had recently been in New England, at or shortly after the death of Isaac Johnson (September 1630); this John Drake, then, would have been in New England at the time of requesting freemanship in October 1630, but gone by the time the first group of freemen were admitted in May 1631. Presumably he returned on the Lyon in March 1630/1. He may have returned to New England shortly thereafter, or Francis Drake may simply have lost track of his cousin at this time. In any case, he is not the John Drake who appears briefly in Taunton, Plymouth Colony, late in the 1630s, moves to Windsor, Connecticut, and dies there in 1659 [TAG 63:193-206, 65:87-88].
Douglas Richardson has discovered that John Drake of Windsor derived from Hampton in Arden, Warwickshire [Frederick L. Weis, Ancestral Roots ..., 7th edition (Baltimore 1992), p. 197].

He was thrown down on his face and was run over by one of the cart wheels. A leg was broken and his body was so bruised they thought he was dead. He was carried to his daughter's house and lived only a short time.

===disputed origins===

Unknown. Not accepted as a "Drake of Wiscomb" by genealogists Robert Anderson and Douglas Richardson. See discussion https://www.geni.com/discussions/169080?msg=1154593

Two descendants of John Drake have submitted their Y-DNA test results and pedigrees to the Drake DNA Surname Project. Both results demonstrate that the participants, and therefore their direct male Drake ancestors, belong to haplogroup T and are not related within a meaningful genealogical time period to the majority of other Drakes who can trace their ancestry to the American colonies in the 17th century.

Elizabeth Rogers was more likely born about 1602.

Colonial and Revolutionary Lineage, Vol 1, p. 172. John Drake, son of William and Philippa Denys Drake, was born at Wiscomb, County Devon, England, about 1590 or 1600 and died 8/17/1659, the result of an injury [ run over by an ox cart wheel]. The exact date of John Drake's arrival in New England is not known, but he was listed among those to become freemen, according to the "Boston Record Commissioners' Report," 10/19/1630. His name does not appear on later lists in Boston and details of his life for the next few years have not been found. He was one of the 46 purchasers of Taunton, Mass in 1637, and was in Windsor early in 1639. John Drake received a grant of 14 acres, a home lot with meadow adjoining from the plantation at Windsor, CT, 1/26/1640. He was a member of the jury in the Particular Court, in June, 1643, and for 8 sessions afterward. The inventory of his estate was taken 9/14/1659 and amounted to L324-13-00. John Drake married, probably in England, Elizabeth Rogers, who died at the home of her son Jacob, 10/7/1681. It is said that she was one hundred years old at the time of her death.
