Lt. John Sanborne (Sanborn) was probably in Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire, in 1640, since he was then granted a house lot and a tract of land there. In 1643, his name is signed to a Hampton petition, and from that date the records contain frequent mention of him. His house in Hampton was next to that of Stephen Bachiler (Batchiler) and nearly opposite the old meeting house. On February 2, 1657, he was chosen selectman, and was six times afterwards selected to fill the same office, although not a freeman until May, 1666. In 1664, he was chosen ensign, and October 15, 1679, was commissioned lieutenant of Hampton forces. Served in the early Indian Wars. In addition in 1679 was recommended as a Royal Councillor for the Province of New Hampshire. In 1685 he was chosen representative to the next general assembly. History of Rockingham County, NH -- Hampton
By Charles A. Hazlett -- 1915
Chapter XXXIV
HAMPTON
Lieut. John Sanborn, II with his brothers Stephen and William, came to Hampton in 1640. His mother was a daughter of the Rev. Stephen Bachiler. Lieut. Sanborn was an active, influential citizen, and was chosen to various positions of trust and responsibility. He was one of the most strenuous opponents of the Masonian claim and of Cranfield's administration. He was a signer to Weare's petition to the king in 1683. Father: John Sanborn, I.
In October, 1683, Robert Mason, Sherlock, the marshall, and James Leach came to Sanborn's house in order to give Mason house possession, when Sanborn not opening the door, Leach by the marshal's order broke it open, and gave Mason possession. Mr. Sherlock took Sanborn prisoner, when Mason openly told the people "that is what you shall all come to."
In 1683, Cranfield brought an action against Sanborn for saying, "I question whether ever the King knew of his, the said Edward Cranfield's, commission or patent." His four sons -- Richard, Josiah, John, and Joseph -- were signers to Weare's petition.
Stephen Sanborn was a brother of John and William, and came to Hampton with them.
William Sanborn, brother of the above named, was also an active citizen.
The authorities have been confused as to the identity of Lt. John Sanborn's parents. All agree that the father died in England. They also agree that Lt. John came to America with his mother, his maternal grandfather, Stephen Bachiler, and his brothers, William ( an ancestor) and Stephen in 1632.
Dow said his father was John Sanborn. He wasn't sure about the mother's first name. Perhaps this was a reliance upon an article written by Dr. Nathan Sanborn in Vol. 10 of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, at pg. 271, (1856), which said that "tradition" named the father as "John."
Victor Channing Sanborn wasn't sure about the father's name ["Genealogy of, etc., Sanborn" (1899), pgs. 56 - 58], but he identified the mother as Ann Bachiler. Elmer Corliss Sanborn identified the father, Ann's husband, as Richard, son of Edward ("A Collection of Sanborn Family Genealogies" (1994), pg. 1), and he supports his conclusion with records.
Curiously, however, Elmer Sanborn makes no mention of the previous conflicts and uncertainties. His view is not supported by the evidence.

BIOGRAPHY: John, William and Stephen Sanborn were son of an English Sanborne (probably William of Blimpton, Berkshire, England) and Anne, daughter of Rev. Stephen Bacheler (Batchelder). The three sons of Anne are said to have come to America with their grandfather Bacheler in 1632, but apparently their mother did not come over with them. Lieutenant John Sanborne was probably in Hampton in 1640 since he was then granted a house lot and tract of land there. He married twice - 1st. Mary, daughter of Robert Tuck of Gorlston, Suffolf, England and Hampton, New Hampshire - 2nd. Margaret (Page) Moulton, widow and daughter of Robert Page.
