Notities over William Moulton

Many have attributed William to be the son of Robert Moulton and Mary Smith. I find conflicting proof of this link. I have found reference to the fact that Robert Moulton is rather his uncle, by the fact that Robert’s sons, Thomas and John are his cousins.
as well as a reference to him “joining his brothers, Thomas and John.”

The long line of Moultons who engaged in silversmithing was directly descended from William Moulton who was born in Hampton in 1664. His father, also William, had come to Newbury in 1637 from Ormsby, Norfolk County, England, as had his two brothers, John and Thomas. All three Moultons came to Hampton with Stephen Bachiler and his flock to settle at Winnacunnet in the autumn of 1638. The young William was born in a house which his father had built on a piece of land that was located at what is today the east side of Mill Road where it joins Winnacunnet Road and on which the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Emslie now stands.

William Moulton, the immigrant ancestor, was born in Ormsby, county Norfolk, England about 1617. In his examination before leaving England, his age is given as twenty years, April 11, 1637. He sailed to New England in either the "John and Dorothy" of Ipswich, William Andrews, Master, or the "Rose of Yarmouth", William Andrews, Jr. Master. He came to America at that time with his wife's family, and they landed very likely at Boston, settling first at Newbury, Massachusetts. Here they remained about a year and then joined the new settlement at Winnacunnett, now Hampton, New Hanpshire in 1639. He resided there for the remainder of his life, settling near the homes of Thomas and John Moulton (cousins), and he died there April 18, 1664, aged fourty-seven years.

His will was dated March 8, 1663/64, and in it he says he is "sick and weak of body". He left a large estate for the times, especially for a man dying so young. To his wife he left the west part of his new home and half of his orchard;until she died or married again; also household goods and the whole stock of cattle etc., towards bringing up the children. Joseph received a house and about forty acres of land. His other sons also received land, and the three daughters were bequeathed ten pounds each, when they should come of age or get married, and referred to his child yetunborn (William). he named his father-in-law, Robert Page, and his brother-in-law, Henry Dow, to be executors, thus idicating the identity of his wife's family.
(p. 212)
The will was proved October 11, 1664. He married in England, Margaret, daughter of Captain Robert and Lucia (Lucy Warde) Page. She married second, Lieutenant John Sanborn, and died July 13,1699.(p.919)

"Robert Marston's dwelling house was between the Common and the Meeting-house Green, on the place at present known as the Jerimiah Marston place. The Robert Marston place was sold to William Moulton by Simon Marston (Robert's son). Moulton sold it to Richard Knight, who on October 5, 1653, sold it to Thomas Marston."
(p. 860)
Left England on April 11, 1637 with the Page family. His age is given at twenty years in his "examination" before leaving. They landed probably at Boston, thence he and the Pages went to Newbury, Mass; where it seems they remained something over a year before joining the new settlement at Winnacunnett, now Hampton New Hampshire in 1939. At that place he took up his permanent abode, settling quite near Thomas and John Moulton.
He died April 18, 1664. His will, which is found in Essex County, Mass,. Probate Records, Vol. 2. pages 9-11 bears the date March 8, 1663. He declares himself to be at that time "sick and weak of body.' It is evident that Mr. Moutlton was a man of more than ordinary ability and force of character. Coming as he did to a new country before arriving at his majority, presumably bringing little with him and dying at the early age of forty-seven, he left what was, for those times a large estate--a double mansion in one of the best localities of the new township with "orchyd," tillage land, "medow" and marshes, together with personal estate to no inconsiderable amount. All this was distributed by his will with a curious particularity characteristic of the old country.

--------------------
William came to New England with the family of Robert PAGE [F7614] in 1637, when he was 20 years old. William MOULTON and John MOULTON, both of Ormsby and later Newbury in Massachusetts, were both “examined” on the same day, on 11 APR 1637, before leaving England. John was born about 1599 in Ormsby, and was probably a brother to William; though with the age difference, he could have been his father. Thomas MOULTON was probably another brother. He also lived in Newbury, Massachusetts and Hampton, New Hampshire; but he finally settled in York, Maine.

Two ships apparently sailed together, and these brothers came on one or the other of them. One was the ship John and Dorethy of Ipswich, with William Andrews the master. The other ship was the Rose, commanded by the son of William Andrews.

They probably landed at Boston, and then they went to Newbury, Massachusetts. They remained there a little over a year.

They then joined a new settlement at Winnacunnett, now Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire in (1639-S?). There William MOULTON “took up his permanent abode” near Thomas MOULTON and John MOULTON.

He married Margaret PAGE [7491] about 1651, and they settled for a short time near her parents. William and Margaret moved to Hampton, New Hampshire in (1639-S?)(in 1651-S?).

His will was dated 8 MAR 1663. (Essex County, Mass., Probate Records, Vol. 2, ppg 9-11). In it he declares himself to be “sick and weak of body.” He died 18 APR 1664. He left a large estate, a double mansion in one of the best locations in the new township, with orchards, tillable land, meadows, and marshes, as well as considerable personal estate.
--------------------
Authorities disagree as to William's age when he took the momentous step of sailing as "servant to Captain Page", according to the ship's roster. Captain Page was in command of the ship. William's age is given as seventeen in some accounts but twenty in others. At all events he did not remain a servant long as, on the lengthy and dangerous voyage, he employed some time both pleasantly and profitably in courting the captain‘s daughter, Margaret Page. his wooing could not have taken place while strolling around the deck or leaning over the rail to watch the waves; as a young and able-bodied stripling, he must have been called upon to do many services around the ship tesides waiting on the captain's family. However, he managed to change his condition from servant to prospective son-in-law and he and Margaret were married not long after the ship's arrival in Ipswich.

Most of the ship's passengers stayed only a few months in Ipswich, since the little colony was crowded with emigrants and food was becoming scarce. Mr. Henry W. Moulton who compiled the "Annals of the Moulton Family" states positively that Captain Page, with members of his family, moved from Agawam to Newbury, in 1635. Two historians of Newbury, John James Currier and Joshua Coffin, do not name either Page or Moulton in their lists of the first arrivals in Newbury from Ipswich, but Coffin does mention the fact that there were some persons who cane in the group "whose names are not known with certainty". Page and Moulton may have belonged to this anonymous number.

WILLIAM MOULTON, listed as servant aged 20, came to New England from Ormesby, Norfolk, England, with the family of Robert Page in 1637. Two ships, the Rose and the John and Dorothy, from Ipswich to Boston, arrived at the same time and the passenger lists were not kept separate. In this same immigration came John and Thomas Moulton, also from Ormesby, Norfolk, but the relationship of William to the other Moultons has not been established. The Moulton's, as did the Page family, eventually settled in Hampton, Mass. which did not become a part of New Hampshire until 1679/80. Thomas Moulton later went to York, Maine, and is the Moulton with his men of Whittier's poem Mogg Megone.

Another founder of Hampton was William Estow (son of George Estow) who had married in Ormesby July 15, 1623, the widow Mary Moulton, mother of William Moulton. In William Estow's will, dated October 16, 1655 (he died the next year) his wife is not named, which implies that she was not then living, but he bequeathed to the children (there were then four) of his step-son.

William Moulton married Margaret Page, the eldest of the three children of Robert and Lucy Page, whom they brought with them from England. The date of marriage is not on record. William took the freeman's oath at Salisbury Court October 3, 1654, was a selectman of the town of Hampton in 1649, 1653 and 1658, and died April 18, 1664. In his will, dated the month before, (8 March 1663/4) he named his wife and seven children: Joseph, Benjamin, Robert, Mary (who died a few months later, July 27, 1664), Hannah, Sarah, Ruth, and my Child which is yett un Borne. Father-in-law Robert Page and brother-in-law Henry Dow were appointed executors.

The posthumous child was born the 25th of May and given his father's name. He married Abigail Webster May 27, 1685 and became a primitive Colonial silversmith, his first silver shoe buckles appearing about 1690, made in his shop near Moulton Hill in Newbury, Mass. He was the first of a long line of craftsmen of the Moulton name which continued for over two hundred years. William Moulton of the eighth generation retired from the firm of Moulton & Lunt, gold and silversmiths, between 1915 and 1917.

The widow of the first William Moulton married, some five years after his death, August 2, 1671, John Sanborn, grandson of the Rev. Stephen Batchelder. She is the Margaret Samborne listed in the will of her father, Robert Page, in 1679.
