Traded by sea between Hampton and Martha's Vineyard, 1690 to 1700, in spices,
hides, lumber, etc. About 1700 was captured by a French privateer, vessel,
crew and all. There was a terrible storm but Capt Philbrick steered them safe
into the harbor. The French captain released him with his crew and ship out
of gratitude for their deliverance. This French captain was about to throw
his Bible into the sea, because of a superstition that it had brought him bad
luck, but Capt Philbrick begged him to give it to him, he being a religious
man and much overcome at this threatened deed. It has ever since been kept in
the family. It is a very wonderful Bible, being printed in 1583 in German
block letters and is also a Breeches Bible. It was kept in the Garrison House
until that was destroyed and is now in possession of Mrs Batchelder, at Little
Boar's Head, NH, a direct descendant. Lived in ancestral Garrison House. (a)
