George Mitton Haslam was born 7 November 1872 in Wellsville, Utah, the son of William and Sarah Mitton Haslam. After their marriage, George and Elizabeth made their home in Wellsville, where George worked on his father’s farm. His father purchased as interest in a flour mill in Millville, Utah, and George went to work at the mill learning the mill trade. They lived in Millville for a short time and then moved back to Wellsville. George continued to farm. During the influenza epidemic of 1918 – 1919, Elizabeth was stricken and died 7 February 1919, leaving her grieving husband with a family of small children, the youngest fifteen months old.
Elizabeth Hill Maughan Haslam was born 13 December 1875 at Wellsville, Utah, a daughter of Elizabeth Hill and William Harrison Maughan. Her early life and school days were spent in Wellsville. She married George Mitton Haslam 31 October 1895 in the Logan Temple.
In the spring of 1920, George sold the farm in Wellsville and purchased one in Tremonton, Utah. Crop failure forced them to abandon the farm and move back to Wellsville. In the spring of 1925, their son Royal went to Baker, Oregon, where he worked for the Baker White Pine Lumber Co. He persuaded his father to come to Baker, and he worked as a night watchman for the same lumber company. George later worked for the Stoddard Lumber Company until his retirement at sixty-five. He spent his last year making his home with his children and died 7 March 1954 in LeGrande, Oregon. He and Elizabeth are both buried in Wellsville. They were the parents of ten children: Irma, George, William, Royal, Sarah, Elizabeth, Alda, Eldred, Edna, Dorothy, Daniel, and Kenneth.
