Ruth Ethel
Finch Gruendell
"Ruthie"
1921 ~ 2006
Ruth and Ray are reunited as Ruth's passage and mission here on earth ended May 12, 2006 at the age of 84. She died peacefully of natural causes living at the home of her daughter Susan Schankel and in the company of her children.
She was born December 27, 1921 in Goshen, Utah, the youngest daughter of William Finch Jr. and Caroline Ethel Cole Finch. She grew up in Goshen and attended school there. After high school she moved to Salt Lake City to work. While living there, she met Raymond Arthur Gruendell and they were married five days later on July 7, 1945. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, June 5, 1963. She is preceded in death by her husband Ray, infant son Dwight Arthur Gruendell and daughter-in-law Kathy Patterson Gruendell. Ruth's parents, her brothers Homer, John, Willis, and Gilbert, and sisters Dora and Rose all passed on before her. This must certainly be a joyous reunion. She is survived by her children: Ronald William Gruendell (Vida), Susan Lavon Schankel (Richard), Fredric Raymond Gruendell (Lana), Craig John Gruendell (Kathy). She was also grandma to 23 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
As Ray was an Air Force officer, there was a good deal of traveling while they were raising their family. After military retirement, they settled in Bountiful in 1958, where they lived on Wicker Lane for 40 years. There they made many wonderful friends in the neighborhood and in the Bountiful 11th and 28th Wards. Ruth was awesome as a stay-at-home mom while the kids were young. She later took part time jobs at a day care and school cafeteria, but she was always there to greet us when we came home from school. Ruth was active in the LDS church and held many positions, but she had a special love for the role of Primary Teacher. A particular trait of Ruth was her frequent singing. It seems she always had a song in her heart that would just have to be heard. Often it was a Primary song. She leaves us all better for the privilege of having her in our lives.
