John and family were traveling from London to Utah territory in the Daniel D McArthur Company when John contracted Rocky Mountain Fever which comes from wood ticks. When the party reached camp near Three Crossings John was very weak and died around midnight. He was wrapped in canvas and laid to rest in a grave near the camp site on the East Crossing of Three Crossings at the Sweetwater River in Wyoming. The marker was part of a broken box. Ann, his wife was too ill herself to attend the burial. The family went on because they were only two and a half weeks from reaching their destination of Salt Lake City Utah.
