Notities over Charlotte Adelia Reed

On April twentieth eighteen hundred eighty in a humble home near the banks of the Jordan River, known as North Point Salt Lake County, Utah there was born to Levi Ward Reed and Augusta Larson a baby girl, who was to become in her sixty two years of life a noble, faithful woman. Loved and honored by her children and her children’s children. Although she was christened Charlotte Adelia she was known throughout her life as Lottie. She was the first child born to her mother, who was a convert to the church, coming to Utah from Sweden. Her father was twenty years older than her mother and had a previous marriage to which eleven children had been born, so she became her father’s twelfth child. (names, dates, etc. are recorded on family sheets).

Her father for six years was Bishop of the North Point Ward. He was an honest faithful man. Qualities he passed on to his daughter for she lived a life of unselfish service to humanity. It may be said that she was generous almost to a fault. When she was thirteen years of age her father passed away leaving her mother with a young family to raise. This of course necessitated her helping with the huge task ahead. Her educational opportunities were limited and she was not able to attend school as long as she desired. This however did not prevent her learning and obeying such commandments as: “Love thy neighbor as thyself;” “If thou lovest me thou shalt serve me and keep all my commandments;” and “Thou shalt teach they children to pray and to talk uprightly before the Lord.” Any straying from the truth that we her children, may have done we alone are to blame for she taught us well.

In their neighborhood at North Point lived the family of John and Harriet Lund. Mrs. Lund one day gave Lottie a picture of a nephew who lived at South Weber, David County. Lottie wore this picture in her pocket for quite some time before she was permitted to meet the young man. Then one fall about nineteen hundred she and her mother accompanied this Aunt to South Weber where they purchased their farm produce for the winter months. While there, at the home of another aunt she was introduced to Joseph Henry Earl who became her husband March fifth nineteen hundred two.

To this union was born, during the next nineteen years two sons and eight daughters. After the third child was born they moved to Elwood where they bought a small farm. Here they lvied in a three room log house, well built and warm. Four of their children were born here. While living in Elwood, the oldest child Joseph had a very severe case of Brights Disease. The second son also suffered from rheumatism. Thru the faith and prayers of the parents, the healing power of the Lord, and the wisdom of doctors both children were healed to live their normal lives.

About nineteen hundred thirteen Lottie and Henry took their family of seven children and moved to Cederhill, Oneida Co., Idaho. A new territory had been opened up and they decided to homestead eighty acres of dry land. The first summer here they lived in a tent as they worked to clear the land and build a two room frame house for the coming winter. The going here was rough. All who were old enough to work helped in clearing the land of sagebrush. Lottie often carried a young baby as they helped in the fields. Rattlesnakes and wood ticks were plentiful in this new country so she was constantly on the alert to protect her children against these dangers. The second summer they were there all the children had whooping cough. The nearest doctor was thirty five miles away and the only means of travel was by horse and wagon, so again she relied upon her faith and nursed them all safely through the dread disease.

There were no schools, churches, or community life here. However Lottie and Henry were instrumental in helping build a one room school house so their children might have some advantages of education. They also helped to organize and carry on a Sunday school. One child was born in Cederhill.

After five years the family moved south about fifteen miles south to a town called Holbrook. Conditions here were some better as there was an organized ward and a three room school. Lottie served as Relief Society president for some time, rendering service, and help to those in need. Two more children were born during their stay in Holbrook.

When the oldest children reached high school age another move was made. This time to Malad, Idaho where they spent the next nine years. They kept the farm and home in Holbrook, moving back during the summer months to take care of the harvesting and planting. This proved, however, to be rather difficult to manage. The farm produced no more than a fair living. By nineteen hundred twenty nine several of the children were married and no long dependent on the parents so they sold the dry farm and the home in Malad and moved to Cornish, Utah, a small town in Cache Valley. They moved again in a few years. This time to Provo, Utah where Henry worked at a job and Lottie took in B.Y.U. students as boarders. Thus gave them a little more security but it was short lived as Lottie’s health broke and she was not able to continue. The then moved to Salt Lake City where she spent her last few years doing some temple work and caring for her family as long as she was able to do so.

She passed away on the morning of October eighth, nineteen hundred forty two after a lingering illness diagnosed as cancer. Her body is buried in Wasatch, Laura Memorial Park, Salt Lake City, Utah. Only a few miles from where she first breathed the breath of life.

During her sixty two years on this earth she made many friends. Her character was one of trust, honesty and goodwill. Her faith was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her chief concern was always the welfare of her family and neighbors. She took seriously the Lord’s commandments and kept them faithfully. She believed her body was a sacred house in which her spirit dwelt. So strict was she about this that she would never use lipstick or make up of any kind. She would never take medicines containing drugs. It was only the last few days of her life when her body was wracked with pain that she consented to take pain killing pills and then only under the persuasion of her family. All through her life she worked hard, managed well, loved unselfishly, taught by righteous example, and cherished all things good and beautiful. Indeed, it can honestly be said of her; “She was a good woman.”
