Rueben Joseph "Joe" Farnsworth
ST. GEORGE - Rueben Joseph "Joe" Farnsworth died at the age of 82, June 8, 2007, after a long and valiant struggle with colon cancer. He was born October 3, 1924, in St. George, Utah. His family moved to Ogden when he was 16. He graduated from Ogden High School and attended the University of Utah.
He was a pilot with the 384th Bomb Group during WWII. He was one of the youngest B-17 pilots and flew 36 missions over Germany bringing his crews back safely. He was honored for his military service at the University of Utah on Veterans Day in November 2006.
On September 17, 1948, he married Karlene R. Kammeyer Swenson. He was then called to serve for two years during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning to Ogden he retired from military service to raise his family in Ogden, Utah.
He worked for Kammeyer's Sport Store and eventually purchased the business as co-owner with his brother-in-law, Donald H. Kammeyer.
Joe and Karlene raised their children in Ogden where Joe was an active member of the business community, serving as President of the Ogden Exchange Club from 1972 to 1973. In 1970 Joe and his brother-in-law sold their business. He became a stock broker for Merrill Lynch in 1971 and later became manager of the Merrill Lynch office in Ogden, Utah. He retired from the brokerage firm in 1985 and moved back to St. George, Utah. He loved to hike, golf, and get together with friends and family. He was also an accomplished self-taught artist who loved putting beauty onto a canvas.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robin Joel Farnsworth on May 18, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Karlene R. Farnsworth; his daughter, Julianne Farnsworth-Dorey (Michael Dorey), and grandchildren, Erin, McKinley and Kienan Dorey; his daughter, Sandra Elizabeth Berkenbile (Joseph Berkenbile) and grandchildren, Adam and Brandon Berkenbile; daughter-in-law, Janet Avery-Farnsworth; grandchildren, Sammy and Shari Avery and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Wilde and Edith McArthur.
He will always be remembered for his kindness, humor, integrity, courage, and love of all people.
Graveside services will be held June 15, 2007, 11:00 a.m., in the Tonaquint Cemetery, St. George, Utah.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice. The family also acknowledges the outstanding efforts of Southern Utah Hospice.
