Obituary: Walter Eldredge Grant, Jr.
Our beloved and devoted father, husband and grandfather, Walter Eldredge Grant, Jr., age 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 3, 1999, of complications from an extended illness.
Eldredge was born April 3, 1915, in West Bountiful, Utah, to Walter Eldredge and Ellen Smith Grant. He married Beryl Amelia Randall on September 6, 1940, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She predeceased him on September 7, 1996. Beryl was the light of his life and he loved her with all his heart.Eldredge was educated in Davis County Schools, The George Washington University School of Business, and the University of Utah Law School with a Juris Doctor Degree. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, the Salt Lake, Utah State, and American Bar Associations. He was a charter member of the Historical Landmarks Committee, life member of Sons of Utah Pioneers, an Eagle Scout, member of the Salt Lake Country Club and enjoyed golf, bowling and hiking. He was a decorated Veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Corps for three years.
As an active member of the LDS Church, Eldredge served in many callings. He served his first mission in East Germany and Austria from 1935-1938. He is a former bishop, high councilman, guide and host on Temple Square, quorum advisor and teacher. An avid student of the scriptures, he taught many study groups. One of his passions was teaching early morning Book of Mormon Seminary for over 25 years. He especially loved serving two special missions with his eternal companion, Beryl, in the Salt Lake Liberty Stake and the Washington D.C. Mission.
He is survived by his children and their spouses: Randall and Ann Grant, Jacqueline and Donald Hyland, Mary Ellen and Randall Hatch, and Douglas and Mary Ann Grant. An infant son, Walter Eldredge Grant III, preceded him in death. He is survived by 18 grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters and one brother: Helen Barton, June Anderson, Romania Child and Richard G. Grant. His sisters, Evaletta Thompson and Mary Clark, preceded him in death.
